The winner is....:D

[Edited for results + also comparison with Evo tyre test]

1st: Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric
2nd: Michelin Pilot Sport 2
3rd: Contintenal ContiSport Contact 3
4th: Bridgestone Potenza RE050A

Comparison with Evo tyre test:-

They scored each tyre in 5 categories - wet handling, aqua planing, braking, dry handling and a road test to judge comfort. They also back up the raw time data with subjective reviews on how the tyres felt which counted for 40% of the score.

The results:
1) Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric
2) Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta
3) Continental Contisport Contact 3
4) Bridgestone Potenza RE050-A
5) Michelin Pilot Sport PS2
6) Pirelli PZero Nero
7) Kumho Ecsta STP KU31
8) Dunlop Sport Maxx
9) Yokohama S.Drive

Notes: The Eagle F1 was absolutely stunning in wet performance, but the Pilot Sport was the best tyre in dry performance. However, despite its excellent dry showing, which gave it enough points to claim 2nd place, it was crap in the wet.

I have pilot sports on my car and they are really good in the dry but absolutley AWFUL in the wet (as fox says) understeer into a bush city :p

The pilot sport 2s are rubbish in the rain, but in the dry spot on. Caused the GTi to have enough problems with them in conjunction with contis.

Eagle F1s next time round, probably with new rims I think :-)

Can only get the RE050s at a decent price for the CTR (205/45/R17 W). Looks like those will be my new fronts.

Can't be bothered to watch it, shame they don't have an average price set of 'ditch finders' in for comparison.

There would simply no comparison - ditchfinders would be so far behind that it would be like comparing chalk and cheese.

For example, in the Evo test, one of the tests was braking in the wet in a straight line from 55mph to 0mph and measuring the stopping distance. The worst performing tyre out of the group (which consisted of 'premium' brands and their premium models of tyre) was the Yokohama which took 9 METRES further than the best performing tyre to stop.:eek::eek:

You can only imagine how ditchfinders would perform.....

i cant see this as im on a works computer,,

are toyo proxxis in the test?

i need some 205 45 15's do the f1's come in this size?

AutoExpress did a big tyre test last week. About 12 tyres I think. The problem with all these tyre test (Evo, Autocar, AutoExpress etc) is that some tyres do really well in some tests but not so well in others, but the way they are scored eg. 10 points for 1st, 8 points for second etc, doesn't really give a full picture when you named a 'overall' winner because you're simply adding up points. The Proxes T1Rs for example, was exceptional in wet weather straight line stopping distances, but it didn't win even though it finished only a matter of centimetres behind the winning tyre in that particular stopping test.

The main conclusion, I draw from all these tests (particularly when you read them in detail and look at the stats), is that the 4 or 5 leading tyres tend to be very close - Goodyears, Contis, Michelins, Bridgestones and Toyo. Beyond that, there seemed to be quite marked differences. Yokohamas in particular seemed to do very badly in all the tests and were a long way off the leaders. What is apparent though is that you won't go wrong if you buy Goodyear F1s Asymetrics.

What about Nankang's? they are very cheap and according to my MOT advisory i am tantamount running illegal front tyres on both sides (no name, one was bought part worn LOL, no grip, terrible tyres.)

i dont want to spend £100 per wheel, but obviously with it coming into winter new tyres wityh grip in the wet would be nice,

im talking

205/55/16's on a V rating!
