Only if your daft, why buy the thing in the first place if you are going to worry about something like that!
Anyway, I plan on getting a PS3 around Xmas. Want to play things like Motorstorm, F1, Resistance and maybe Heavenly Sword, but I will still get it even if it means using it as a glorified DVD player for the first few months.

Indeed. I've had 12 hour gaming sessions on the 360 and not had a problem with it. Sure, my first Xbox died but it was a release day model and they were the ones most prone to problems. My replacement hasn't had any problems as yet *touches wood*. If nothing else leaving it on serves as a cheap way to keep a room warm

I'm not daft at all, I bought it on the spur of the moment, didn't consider it would have big issues as my original Xbox was on all the time, dropped and kicked by the kids and never ever had any problems with it at all.
They also didn't offer the 3 year warranty until after mine was sold so I didn't want to be left with out a console once the warranty had expired.
After spending £320 on a console I think being concerned it may pack up at anytime is a valid reason for not leaving it on all the time.

Thats very condescending - people have a right to be worried about the performance & reliability of hardware that costs hundreds of pounds.
But to the point where you don't want to leave it on too long in case it breaks? Give over.
Sorry, just my opinion. I wouldn't buy something if I was worried to that extreme. Due to the nature of the 360's problems, if its going to break, it will do. Not really got a lot to do with how long you have it turned on for.

This can't be right, you're paying a few hundreds pounds for something that is not reliable? It seemed to be the opposite for PS3.
While I'm not really a fan of PS3 but there's no excuse of Microsoft for the poor reliability.

I used to go to mates places and see theirs, feel fairly underwhelmed, and come back to my PC.
This year, instead of getting an 8800GTX, I used the money to get a PS3. Was the right decision. It does have games that I'd not otherwise have been able to play. At the time, Motorstorm was nibbling away at me, and I really wanted to play it.
Since then, plenty of titles have come out, more than I can afford, even at import prices (remember, all PS3 games are region free)
The tired old argument about there not being many games really isn't true any more. People who already have XBOX360s can say there are less exclusives, as a lot of games are cross platform, but if you don't have an XBOX360, then there are more than enough games to keep you occupied.
Besides the games, like another poster mentioned, I didn't want to spend any more money on DVDs, as I thought it was time to start getting Bluray only.
So, I can say, from my own perspective, and I paid £400 back in April for mine, that it's been worth every penny. I went from being rather a PC snob (though I do still prefer FPS on PC) to playing on the PS3 a lot. In fact, I've played on the PS3 every day I've been home, since I've owned it.... even if just in the evening to enjoy a bluray, or upscale a DVD.
I'm not bashing the XBOX360 at all, I know my mates are mostly happy with them (except none of them are on their original consoles) but for me, who has a gaming PC, the PS3 seemed to offer more to me, than the XBOX360.
I probably haven't convinced you here, but all I can say, is I've been delighted with mine, the games are great, it's nice and quiet, I personally do like the PS3 pad, bluray is excellent, and now you can get them a lot cheaper than I paid for mine, plus it has a good second hand market now, I recommend one even more.
The main thing to take into consideration I guess, is as also been mentioned above.... if you like a particular franchise, like Halo, and don't want to wait for the PC version, then you'd be better off with the box, and if you like Sony exclusives, like Gran Turismo, Rachet & Clank etc, then you're better off with a PS3. Personally, I've found games like Resistance to smash what I expected of it, far far better, Motorstorm is still good fun, and the online side is a good laugh, DiRT is excellent on the PS3, and I'm really looking forward to games like Haze, and Drake's Fortune.

Excellent console, and if you already have a decent gaming PC, and a HDTV? Then Its a much better buy than a 360.

I'm wondering if the existing stock of 60GB PS3's will be depleted before the xmas rush?
If so, will Sony then do the 40GB bundled with a couple of games for £299.
I'm trying hard to wait (the temptation is killing me) and see because I am not fussed about the features missing on the 40GB version and I'd rather £50 quid in my pocket than in Sonys.

That might be true.
Ironically my mate has a Honda Prelude and his GF a Renault Clio. They're both out of service, but the Honda is older.
But as for the PS3, mine broke and my Xbox360 never. Whilst that's undoubtedly against the run of the mill, it's what happened.
.Thankfully Sony's replacement service is a million miles better than Microsofts
