Why are we still refering the 360 and ps3 next gen, when the pc gfx are about 2 gen ahead. And the 360 is 2 years old and the ps3 a year now. What are we going to call the real next gen? Future gen? Don't remember any of the old consoles refer as next gen either.

I remember the PS2 and Xbox being referred to as next-gen for quite a while. Basically until the previous generation is completely dead and rumours of PS4/Xbox 720 begin.

Lol, I dunno why people still use the term next gen ;)

For me, the first "next gen" was the Playstation One.

Had my Amiga then, saw Porsche Challenge running on it, and Tekken 2, wow!

The next consoles were improvements.

Then the next "next gen" was, to me, High Definition gaming for consoles.

So, maybe by the time the next big thing comes along, for Playstation 5 or whatever, we'll have the next, next gen? ;)

I dunno, that Star Trek, has a lot to answer for! ;)

I would say the 360 and Ps3 are now classed as current gen, but since we have no hint yet of whats to come, the press will still call it next gen.

Or maybe they're called Next Gen, as more people still have PS2s and stuff, so to the majority it's Next Gen.

When the PS2 starts getting overtaken by "Next Gen", and they stop making games for it, maybe then, XBOX360 and PS3 will just be the current thing... all ready for the next gen to start up again.

Or maybe, when the XBOX720 or PS4 are ready for release, they'll automatically become "next gen" demoting the current consoles to current/previous gen?

Personally as soon as it's released it's here and current technology and thus current gen. Next gen is and should be up and coming technology that we don't have in our front room yet.

and this being the point I think.

Most people don't have it in their front room yet.
When they (most people) do, it'll be current gen.

Took a while for DVD to be adopted as mainstream, now it definitely is.
Just because I can play bluray, doesn't make it mainstream yet.

Maybe that's the meaning?

Current gen = mainstream

We only really use 'last gen' and 'next gen'; there really is no current gen just a state of perpetual improvement. The moment we hear anything about the next Xbox / PS the 360/PS3 will be classed as 'last gen' and we'll start the cycle again.

its due to the games being developed for the next generation of console which allow for a next generation of gameplay compared to the previous generation ;)

When murmurings of PS4 and X720 starts to come, I think the 'next-gen' label will stop being applied to the current consoles. The current consoles are still finding their stride so there's plenty of reason to keep calling them next-gen.
