This isn't for me, but a colleague whose daughter needs a suitable 4x4 to tow a horse box.

She's interested in the Daewoo Musso, specifically a 2000 model with an automatic box and the 2.9TD engine. This is a Mercedes lump, which is something in its favour, but what about the gearbox? Is that a Mercedes sourced unit, or something really nasty and likely to grenade?

The main criteria are that it must be reliable, and cheap to repair if it does break. Landrovers and Shoguns seem to be out of the question due to running costs/age/purchase price. Towing ability is obvioulsy important, and the Daewoo is up to the job. Budget is £3.5K, and remember this is a woman, so it needs to be a bit comfy at least. An economical-ish diesel is also a must, so no Jeep 4.0 V8's!

Is there anything that would mean the Daewoo is a definite lemon, aside the looks/lack of prestige?

Cheers

We were going to use a musso at work for towing cars with a trailer but it would only do 40mph max while towing so it was way too slow for us now we have got a ford ranger that will hit 100mph while towing:)

Late 90s 3.0td Landcruiser with 100k+ miles would fit the bill i think. will go on forever.

all i know about the musso is its supposed to be awful.

Cheers guys. The woman has her eyes set on the Musso (there's one in a garage local to her). I think she'll go with it, unless there's a very good reason not to. I can't find a reason yet!

Landcruiser sounds good. I'll mention it tomorrow.

Ouch, 2.9TD is 117bhp. Car weighs.. 1900kg.

:D Awesome, isn't it?

Speed/acceleration is (hopefully) not too much of an issue. It's a very slow vehicle, that's for sure. If she test drives it, she may well find it too slow (again hopefully :D).

Whilst I'm sure she doesn't need 0-60 in 5 seconds, acceleration IS an issue becuase how on earth do you pull out onto a busy roundabout in a 1900kg 117bhp car pulling a trailer containing a horse?

Well lets face it, anything that fits the requirements is going to drive like a large container ship.

I would say a Shogun would be perfect - age isn't an issue really IMO, providing it's been looked after. My dad had a 1989 2.5TD which was on 270k, which he only changed last year because he got a brilliant deal on a 125k 1996 3.0 V6.

Yes some things can be expensive to repair, but they're pretty reliable so the failures will be low.

I'd certainly have a Shogun over a Musso!

It needs to be something meaty. Anything wrong with a slighly older Disco?

Last time I towed something it was in an A4 Avant All Road with a 3.0Tdi Quattro lump.

;)

how about a lpg ford explorer? my old boss had one to replace his discovery and was happy with it.

edit, his misses kept horses for a living, so he had it for the same reason. Afiak due to weight you need a proper 4x4 to tow a 2 horse trailer
