Okay im 18 years old, id say this is my second decent job, but my 5th or 6th paying job..

Im just wondering what the Nat min wage is for me?

My boss seems to think its £4.50 or maybe £4.55 due to a recent rise the wage structure..

My best mate told me his friend owns his own company and its well over £5... i dont bloody know what it is and it quite like to know as i could be loosing a lot of money here...

Cheers peeps,

James.

What are the current rates of the national minimum wage?

There are three levels of minimum wage, and the rates from 1st October 2007 are:

* £5.52 per hour for workers aged 22 years and older
* A development rate of £4.60 per hour for workers aged 18-21 inclusive
* £3.40 per hour for all workers under the age of 18, who are no longer of compulsory school age.

So £4.60 is your minimum wage at the moment basically. Quite easy to get well in excess of this if you get some kind of qualification for specialist work, such as lifeguarding etc.

Development rate?

£4.60 how can they justify such a crap rate...

no wonder the unemployment rate is so bloody high, pay is peanuts tbh... id have to work 60 hours to rake in £276? thats ****, really annoys me, crap pay, gonna have to look for a new job, i cant cope with that crap, for 40 hours i get £184, minus ******* tax, fgs i cba with that...

Get a better job then, the unemployment rate is high because Britain is full of lazy people.

It's not their fault they don't have jobs, it's a government conspiracy, along with fat people.

If you cant cope with minimum wage then do what it takes to get a better job. And tbh, lots of other places have it even worse, where you have to work longer/harder and still end up making less.

Unemployment is high because lazy people who can't be bothered to get qualified or skilled don't want to be paid peanuts and would rather scrounge. Hurrah for qualified/skilled/deserving non lazy hardworking people and maybe immigrants.

It annoys me, i work and work, i dont care about working, its something to do, i enjoy it, im a bloody shelfstacker/till worker and i also do shifts in the butchers which might earn me an apprenteship soon.. im working becuase i have nothing to do and there isnt much at college except a 1 evening a week corse i do.. I want a decent career tbh... i dont know what though and that annoys me more...

even though, i dont understand why that rate is what it is, like my mum said to me the other day, people are 18 tend to move out, so why should they be entitled to less then a 22 year old..

Seriously, if you just want better pay then do a NPLQ (National Pool Lifeguard Qualification) and you get paid £6-9 an hour for standing around watching people, unless someone actually drowns, then you might have to do something.

There's really high demand for lifeguards, and most leisure centres get the courses regularly so they can recruit people who took the course.

It's easy as well.

To encourage young people to think about careers/training to fastrack them to a higher wage?

To be honest it's pretty rare for a lot of jobs to give the 18-22 minimum wage, most just use the normal minimum wage for the sake of it, bar work etc, there are loads of jobs you can get into, just take a look around and see what you can get, as long as you're keen you will be far more appealing than most of the applicants.

You would think, i still find it hard to find jobs, and i personally dont know anyone else who WANTS to work like i do, ill work 60 hours a week, i used to do it, i dont care, its ace, i love working, meeting new peeps, having a laugh, talking, things like that..

just annoys me, i need a decent job with prospects but like i said i dont know what i want to do at all... something different, exciting, something thats a challenge but which will accept me.

In my experience, it is only the worst jobs that will give a different wage depending on age. I worked in an inbound call centre for 3 years, and I think I started at around £6 when I was 19. We had quite a few 16 year olds over the time I was there, and they would have all started on at least £6 too.

My office wasn't just a call centre, which meant there was quite a lot of potential for moving up. I know a lot of people moved over to fraud, which was a higher pay grade, and several students were offered jobs relating to their degree within the company after they graduated.

If you want something with potential, then get out of the supermarket now. Call centres generally pay more, and if you look for banks or similar then there's a lot of room for expansion beyond telephony.

Work in a call center, had the job at college and it suited and just not broke the habit and got a new job yet. But its decent wages, bout 8ish an hour and bonus schemes and pay rise every year depending on your performance.

I would think about getting a better job, always loads of overtime in call center jobs too.

Do what im doing and join the navy. :)

Or if you want a real challenge - royal marines! (betya wudnt be able to hack it though :p)

real men join the army! :P

but that is a good point tbh, things like the armed forces could be a good way to try different things, since there is a huge range of jobs in the armed forces so maybe go down to a armed forces careers office and see if theres anything that interests you. Even if you dont want to join the armed forces, it may be a good way to get some ideas of potetial fields that may interest you.

I left Safeway at 18 on about 6.20/hour...

But I had been there for over two years and was doing a supervisor's role.
