Around this time last year, after reading Rotty's countless posts (in many threads) about Vegas i made my mind up that when i finished Uni (June '08) and more importantly turned 21 i would go to Vegas.

A year on and this hasn't changed, if anything i want to go even more, i know its still 8-9 months away but i thought i better start planning and look to book everything as early as i can so that i can get the best deal possible.

Thanks to Rotty's advice in other threads all i need to check are the prices of the hotels and flights as these change depending when you go.

Im looking at going any time between the end of June (20th onwards) and mid August for around a week. So far the cheapest direct flights i can find are with Virgin for £550 or indirect with United for £390 (though ive heard some bad stuff about them).

As for the hotel, im not overly worried where i stay as i don't plan on spending too much time in my room nor will i stay in the one hotel for the duration of the trip, though i would want something half decent and in a decent enough location. So far ive found the Excalibur (in one of the upgraded rooms) for around $750, the Monte Carlo for $1000, NYNY for $1100, TI for around $1200 or the Mirage for $1300 (last 4 have all been basic rooms though). Other than that they've either been $1800+ which i don't fancy paying or places that i don't fancy staying in.

Basically are the flight prices ive found acceptable or am i likely to find something better? Same for the hotels and is it worth paying the extra to stay in one of the other hotels rather than the Exaclibur (which im leaning towards)?

Thanks

Sounds quite pricy but then that may be related to the time you're going. I'm off at the start of November and I'm paying £800 for a Virgin package (fnar) staying at NYNY for a week. Excalibur is OK if you can put up with all the fake English accents and hey-nonny-nonning though (I had to a few years back).

Sounds rather pricy to me too but again that may be down to the time of year. Excalibur is OK for a show but I'm not sure I could put up with the fakeness for a week.

PS - hope you like the heat (though thankfully it's usually dry heat).

£550 is steep for economy flights with Virgin and I doubt United are much worse though there will be a connection, I am there early June and have paid £773 business class with Maxjet

re hotels

Excalibur is nothing special but it is perfectly adequate

Monte Carlo is right at the side of the bigegst buiding project in US history so wouldn't stay there at them moment

NYNY is ok and a differnce of about $250 over Excalibur is about right

TI and Mirage are very nice places and the prices are about right for these hotels

Late June is coming into oine of the cheapest times of year though the WSOP will probably keep the prices up a bit

The hotel price is between 2 of us so that would bring the cost of the trip to around what Belmit is paying for his package in November.

Have a look at the Planet Hollywood hotel, it's opposite the Bellagio and you can see the fountains if you are on the strip facing side, it's a very nice hotel too. Flight prices do seem a little steep though, I paid 600 quid for 4 nights with Virgin, staying in the Luxor (wouldn't stay there again) this September, was there for my mate's 21st :D

I love the way the Planet Ho charges extra for a fountain view room

THEY'RE NOT YOUR BLOODY FOUNTAINS :p

I would not worrie about the Monte Carlo being next to the city center as by the time you are going i would have thought all the exterior work would just about be done. I came back last month and the back 2 towers are nearly built, they had hardly even started this last time i went which was around june the previous year. And i was astounded at how fast they had put up the wynn second tower.

Yea, Wynn second tower was nearly finished (probably is now). They must work 24/7 or something.

They just had 2-3 floors worth of sheeting/windows to put on the front then internal work, a year before i do not even recall seeing it even started.

Encore ( Wynn new tower ) is a way off opening yet

Project CC still has over 3 yrs to go afaik

I stayed at the MGM Grand was cheapish and the room was nice enough and its got a monorail station which makes it easy to get up and down the strip

Aye, it was the same when it was the Aladdin, I did raise this point at the time too :p

When I was there in September the second Wynn Tower was no where near finished, the new tower for the Venetian on the other hand is almost done, looked like they just needed to add some glass to the top of the tower and some work on the ground. Also the Trump hotel is coming along nicely although it looks a bit boring, looks similar to the Hilton.

Palazzo ( new Venetian tower ) is due to open just before Christmas

I think the Trump one is primarily condos

I know you've set your mind to go to Vegas, but I've just come back from 10 days there (work conference), and I would have to say that it's one of the most depressing places I've ever had the misfortune to visit (and I travel worldwide a lot...).

I know you'll be there for a holiday so it's a bit different to being there with work, but if you just want to go there to gamble, watch some shows and shop for designer clothing then I'm sure you'll have a great time. If you're prepared to pay a bit you can get a flight over the grand canyon as well. Just don't expect there to be anything else to do there...

Frankly, the sight of people sat on the slots in their pyjamas at 4am (I kid you not...) and scruffy mexicans thrusting cards for 'ladies' into your hand all the way down the strip made me realise that Vegas is mainly a great example of just how low mankind can stoop.... :(
