Xbox 360, does it upscale ?

As title, if your playing a DVD on the 360 to a HDTV does it upscale the pic? like a upscaling DVD player for example ?

Yup, Only via VGA or HDMI on the new ones i believe.

doh my release day console seems to be playing a dvd via componant at good quality at 720p ? would it play HDDVD's at 720p via componant ? Will it play HD DVDs at all via componant ? my tv is 720p, or 1080i only

I think this is right:

Will play games at 720p through component.

Will play HD-DVD's at 720p through component.

Will not upscale DVD's over component (For legal reasons rather than an inability to do so)

ah ok , and also 1080i I assume? why can a £20 upscaling dvd drive upscale and not the 360 then ?

It's not to do with hardware limitations, it's for legal reasons/copy protection.

1080i also yes.

well yeah was asking what these legal reasons are,and why are cheapo dvd players allowed to upscale and 360 not ? is what im wondering thanks for your help so far guys

Games will do 1080p through component and vga and i think HD-DVD will do it also, but it will only upscale over VGA or HDMI.

Edit: HD-DVD will do 1080i over component, dvd's only 480i/p.
