hi all.

is it worth getting the elite over the Platinum version??

im about to step out to get one tonight but cant decide. are the only main differences the hard drive and wi-fi?

If you're only interested in games, then no, I wouldn't say so. Currently the Elite is only worth it if you want to download all the demo's and videos off the marketplace without deleting. The real purpose of the Elite is for Microsofts Video download service, however that's currently not in place.

The Elite doesn't have wi-fi. It's got a bigger HDD and a guaranteed HDMI socket with the cables. The premium might have a HDMI, you'd need to check the box first and see but you don't get the cables with it.

If you plan on downloading films and TV stuff from the Video marketplace when it becomes available, the 120GB HDD in the Elite will benefit you. Otherwise to upgrade from the premium's 20GB drive, you're looking at £130.

I was under the impression you do get the cables with the HDMI premiums...

I do not think you get a hdmi cable or the sound dongle.
I believe the sound dongle costs about £25 and a hdmi cable is about £10.
So if you add the price of these cables to a premium console you might as well get an elite where you get all the cables in the box.

The HDMI cable and the audio dongle come together in the official HDMI AV Cable pack which is around £35 but not available over here yet. Quite annoying really, but I just got a 85p HDMI cable from sainsburys and took the plastic surround off the component cable and they both fit in fine.

An 85p HDMI cable! I just shelled out £21 for mine. Am I a victim of false marketing? LOL.

I've always found cheap cables to be more expensive in the long wrong (they break, or don't give as good picture quality and I end up buying the high end stuff later)

Plus how much ££££ difference is there now between a premium and elite

No. Chances are if you paid ~£21 for a cable it's a damn-site better in terms of quality.
You'll still get people that blab on about being a digital, lossless signal. But they'd be wrong.

That's a rather brash and completely untrue statement to make.

I assume you mean build quality of the cable (ie whether it is brittle, not shielded etc), cos if you mean in terms of picture quality, there is no difference. For analogue cables there is a difference, for digital cables there is none based on my experience.

To most people "quality" in terms of a video cable would be the quality of the picture. I have tried a Monster 50 odd pound cable against a 5 pound one. They are absolutely identical in terms of picture quality.

rp200

Edit: To the guy who asked, you did sort of get done, but £21 is not terrible, other people have been suckered into buying £50 - £100 HDMI cables.

when its digital, its either off or on. if it works it works. and to the human eye, aslong as the cheap cable is under 5M, there will be no difference

I have had no problems with it, and seriously I would notice. I am a total geek about picture quality. I bought quite a few of them, the build quality probably isnt as high as the others but that why I bought a few. If one breaks (which they havent yet) then I use another one and its still cheaper!
