So I was reading this months PC Gamer whereupon there was an article relating to EA and their online games to download. Apparantly, once you have purchased an EA title online and download it to install, you only have a further 6 months to be able to download it. After six months, if you haven't paid them an additional £2.99 you cannot download the content!

WTH is this?!?

The real annoying factor is that they do not have the ability to save the downloaded content to backup - much like Steam offers. As such, if you need to re-install after 6 months then you're up the creek without a paddle.

I feel this is just pure taking the michael and as such will never buy another EA title online - just a shame I had bought the add ons for both BF2 and BF2142 online :(

The additional £2.99 fee allows download of content for a further 2 years.

Their online prices are a rip off anyway, ill take a box and disk over the more expensive download any day of the week

I think steam will go this way one day

The bandwidth costs to let you download the game whenever and forever are simply just too much.

I doubt it will. Valve are pretty adamant about their community. They would lose everybody if they turned into EA.

Also EA Link is fully awful. I've never used such a horrible platform. Although who would have thought... what with EA being such a quality developer. Perhaps they should use their revenue and experience generated from their 4 top 20 SIMS titles to develop something a little better.

statistics?

i can't seem to provide evidence that the bandwidth costs, are too much for them, however i can provide information from wikipedia, that in 2005 their revenue/turnover was 70million USD, so i imagine they must be doing alright :)

No evidence but you don't have to be einstein to see that

millions of users with hundreds of games and no limit on how often or how many times you can download them.

Once the user has paid, they are not making any profit for valve. So evert user is drain isn' it?

70mil turnover, but profit? And year on year, how much are bandwidth costs on existing sales eating into that? Bit naive to think that just because a company makes xxx$, they dont mind losing it.

I hate EA with a passion!

Ever since they basically told me "we can't figure it out, so **** off" over a problem with BF2 not updating my stats on ranked servers. I had over a year of contact with that pathetic group of monkeys that they call 'support' and in the end it turned out I'd wasted money on BF2 and all the expansion packs.

To this day, my stats still don't update. I got the game on day of release and have played well in excess of 1000hrs on ranked servers and yet I'm still a PFC with no unlocks at all, and still they cretins at EA refuse to answer my emails.

Screw 'em I say!

:eek::eek::eek:

Thats horrendous, I would take a crowbar to their shins and pour salt in the wounds!

i know its only turnover, but they only have 144 workers according to wikipedia, so maybe a quarter will go on wages, also remember games cost more to download, so they have extra profit their, and i imagine if they gave the internet people 10million they would let them have unlimited bandwidth, i don't really understand how you go about making your own internet like ntl or bt :/

Go on private ranked servers, I'm on one where you get all weapon unlocks just after the first rank upgrade. ( offcourse, only for that server )

Yeah, that's a solution but I didn't pay the money to do that and that's what really getting to me. They have my money and then told me to **** off due to their incompetence.

Anyway, I hear those private servers are populated by people who like Burger King and as such just waddle around being easy targets. ;) :p

Well I sticked to one server in particular and it's awesome, well admined and not that many annoyances wich I keep hearing about on these forums.
Try the rulez servers anyhow.

Simple solution, download it when you buy it, burn the cache folder with all the files to dvd and then pull the CD key from the registry once you've installed it.

Least thats what iv done with bf2142

well if you are silly enough to loose it, then 299£ isn't a horrendous amount, but yes, it is a greedy company!

What about if your hard disk is damaged or wiped by accident or if you upgrade your PC? Why should you have to pay a token sum of £2.99 for the privilege of being allowed to download content that you have already paid full price for?

To me it's not about the £2.99 but the principle. As far as I'm concerned once I have paid for a game, there should not be any further costs incurred - simple as. (Barring further expansion packs, etc of course).

go read their forums, they promised people instant access to the beta and the demo 24hrs earlier than anyone else if they pre oredered the digital version online. loads of people in uproar and reporting them to the advertizing standards but you wont see them posts as they've all been deleted. monkeys can't even make sure people who buy their stuff get what they pay for.

Its the law of the internet that you ignore EA like an invisible piece of turd. Everyone knows that they are so bad thats its not worth even talking about them anymore.
