can anyone good at maths tell me an easy way to do this sum.

If ive got a price of £3000 inc vat for example
Whats the way to calculate the amount excluding vat?

TIA

workout 10%, divide that in half to get another 5%, then divide that in half again = 2.5% then add all the figures together :) But much easier way in the post above!

edit: then takeaway that figure from £3000 to get the exc VAT price!

Vat = 17.5%

3000 inc vat is equal to 100%

100% minus 17.5% = 82.5%

Therefore, (3000/100)x82.5 = £2475 ex. vat

fail

3000 = 117.5% of the price excluding VAT. So the first method is spot on, divide by 117.5 then multiply by 100 to get the price before vat

or 2553.19 in this case

I'd divide by 1.175 (£2,553.20)to deduct the tax, or multiply by 1.175 (£3,525) to add the tax.
