IPTV for 360 - a tie up with BT

Yes you have to have BT internet to get the iptv service through the 360, which is a bit of a shame because its a feature I might be interested in but there is no way I am swapping my 20meg ntl cable broadband for crappy BT up to 8meg adsl broadband.

Guess I will be going with the play tv add on for the ps3 instead.

I really don't like this at all, like any other 'exclusivity deal' this is unfair and alienates a large portion of your user base... similar to the iPhone + O2 fiasco :(

Oh, I have free BT broadband, so I will use that to connect to my 360, the modem is packed away because it was crap for downloading but its all good for IPTV

So how would this work with stupid download limits and Fair Usage policies in the UK.

Strangely enough i've just been looking at bt's btvision service - being a customer already and them only wanting £30 for an 80 hour freeview PVR with a pair of powerline ethernet adapters ;)

Anyway apparently the BTvision service from them doesn't count towards your monthly broadband usage - this was one of the worries I had - so I guess you do have to be a BT customer if you want the IPTV on your xbox at least initially.

As a previous poster stated, how the hell is this going to work with monthly download caps and fair usage policy.

ISP's are gonna have to get together and figure this stuff out, because more and more of these types of services are on the horizion and BT especially don't have the network to handle large scale media streaming, especially if its HD material.

edit: disregard the first sentence.

BT Broadband ISP or an ISP on BT's ADSL network?

BTBroadband ISP.

Yes they do , it's called multi-cast and was trialled by the BBC and select ISPs last year - it lets you push lots of content efficiently out to lots of viewers.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest as I don't use the 360 for a media centre anyway, but if I did, I would be emailing Microsoft with a rather stern and hefty letter of complaint.

Personally I can't see how they can do it. This isn't exclusive to UK owners, and in the states they have several telecom providers and the IPTV service isn't locked to one, so why should we be different.

MS have shot themselves in the foot here, BT suck and nearly everyone knows it :) Voted one of the worst for everything iirc.

Would not say BT are voted worse, thinkbroadband has them just about the same as every other ISP.

But it is a bit silly to limit it to BT ISP only.

Does it say only BT customers can access it? Would be pretty stupid of MS to limit it to one provider. In fact that would be bloody insane. I haven't read the article (feeling lazy!) but I can't see MS doing that.

I think you are getting confused with the Video Market place. As far as I know no country has the 360 IPTV service yet. The service also relies on the backend provider having some Microsoft IPTV kit, they use proprietry technology (sort of). BT already have this and they sell some stuff on that BT vision service, which is restricted to BT broadband ISP as well. I doubt many other ISPs would be anxious to pay to have their own servers, and have to get licensing for the content.

Plus this is different to Video marketplace, which is just content hosted on MS servers (for USA customers). The big question is where is our Video Market Place? Was supposed to be coming by the end of the year. They should sort that out first before offering an inferior IPTV based service.

no-ones forcing you to join them, its just a pro of having BT as an ISP now, just like no download limits on others, or faster speeds is..
