Spec me a sleeper.

For 4k, you'll get a 99 318iS. Won't really be a sleeper though.

Please do not spend £4000 on an 8 year old 4 cylinder E36 3 Series with cloth seats. I don't care that its an iS with a whole 140bhp either (Wow thats like... as much as a Mondeo LX!), it's silly money for an ancient design.

The OP could get a 2001-2002 Seat Toledo V5 for that money. A small V5 badge and unique alloys are the only things that make it different from the 1.4

He could go one better and get the 20VT. A remap will take it to between 210 and 230bhp and with some breathing mods, 250bhp is fairly easy. It looks exactly like the diesel model too and I have found that mine is quite a good sleeper.

Something tells me with 0NCB that engine transplants and ECU remaps perhaps aren't the best of suggestions, as most insurance companies would probably just laugh. Either at him or as he hands over a cheque for £3000 :p

meh, it was in budget, just lol.

Saying that a standard 2L converted Corsa was only £600 TPFT for my gf with 1yncb.

I really don't understand the attraction in getting a **** car that is faster than other motorists would perceive. What is the point? So you can gain 2 seconds of satisfaction while they watch in awe at your speedy little crapmobile?

If you have to ask, you'll never understand.

If the age limit weren't in place, I'd say Vauxhall Senator with a 24v engine plus a few tweaks. Badge it up as povo-spec.

Genuine 170mph car after a couple of mods...

My mum's V5 was just shy of £3k...It's getting a 'free-er flowing' exhaust and a remap soon...

They sound so lovely too...

This is my bro's old car. He converted it himself one weekend. Standard 2.0L engine with full interior and the 1.2 peashooter exhaust. Got a 14.7 sec 1/4 at Shakespear race way. Total cost of this car including conversion was £800.
Not a vauxhall fan, but there is no disagreeing that's great value for money!

What has he done about suspension and brakes?

For me presonally its more about cheap performance and that I prefer subtle looking cars rather than 'Fast & Furious' looking cars.

For me it also has a lot to do with the running costs. For example, my brothers Corsa was in perfect mechanical order with only a slight bit of rust on the passangers door. It cost him £800 all in which bought the car, engine, mounting kit, suspension, wheels, upgraded brakes and all the other parts to complete the coversion. He used it everyday without any problems. It did 19 runs on the 1/4 mile being thrashed every time without using a drop of oil or fluid. He did 3 open track days at Donington, driving there and back. While on the track his "Crappy Corsa" was quicker than a year old Civic Type R driven by a friend with track experience and a few turbo motors who had too much power to be usable.

With all this under its belt in a 6 Month period and besides petrol etc it only needed new brake pads and a set of tyres costing £150. Budget sleeper that requires minimal looking after and so much fun.

If you want a sleeper as the OP suggests then who cares what it looks like. I generally find people who start all the "Crappy car" comments don't understand what 'sleepers' are about. They also tend to be badge snobs too.

It's for those people who need a car as a penis extension but can't afford an M3 or a Ferrari so instead, get a crap car, make it go fast and drive around racing random people to prove that their penis is bigger.

The funny thing is you are so wrong with that attitude. Most of the guys I know who own sleepers (Corsa, Nova, Astra etc) drive Audi's, BMW's or generic rep mobiles on a day to day basis.

Sure there's a fair amount of idiots but generialising like that shows off you snobbery and ignorance, yet again.

Thats fair enough mate. I'm mainly a Vauxhall 'fan' because I had so much experience with them. I know there are far better examples about but I'm happy tinkering with crappy Vauxhalls :)

The suspension was just a cheap lowering/stiffening kit. Think it was Spax.

The brakes were upgraded from tiny 1.2 jobbies to Drilled Astra GTE 256mm. Don't need to be huge as the car weighed in at sub 900KGs.

Of course, becuase anyone who doesn't personally see the appeal of a rubbish car with an uber engine is not entitled to their opinion, becuase this is the internet and their only reason for not agreeing with you must be the fact they are snobby and ignorant.

Opportunities to waste people off the lights are very rare. They are rare enough in a car people may want to race, rare still in a Corsa which everyone thinks is a standard 1.2 LS and is thus unlikely to be wasting anything off the lights.

Therefore it would seem daft to drive a 94 Corsa instead of something else becuase 0.5% of the time you drive it you might beat something good off the line.

Not at all. You seem to love rubbishing ever car you don't like even though the Corsa is a perfect example of a sleeper, which is what the OP asked for. Yes its a rubbish car overall, but it serves its purpose. Personally I get the feeling you are a snob. Many of your posts and the posts of others suggest this so its no surprise you just in as soon as a Vauxhall is suggested, no matter how much it fits the OP's needs.

There you go generalising again! The car I mentioned wasnt designed for 'traffic light grand prix' it was a cheap, functional, day to day car that had decent performance and could stand up to absuse on a track.

Yes its daft to drive a 94 Corsa that is always fun to drive, doesnt brake but would be cheap to fix if it didnt. Has the performance of much more expensive cars on a shoestring budget and can be left anywhere with less chance of it being targetting by jealous idiots. You've based 2/3 of your post on beating people of the line, when its got nothing to do with that. Very blinkered tbh.

Oh forgot to add, in the case of this Rubbish Corsa's owner. His main car was an 06 Mondeo Titanium X. He's such a chav lol.

What about an ex top of the range late 90's Volvo 700 series turbo estate fitted with a new turbo like the one in the back of my car:

But the whole sleeper thing is great in theory but I cant see how it works in practice. Say you pull up next to an Audi A4 3.0 Quattro in the Corsa and want to embarras the driver - something youve said is the purpose of the sleeper.

Trouble is, your car looks like a Corsa 1.2 LS. Why is the A4 driver going to take off like a bat of a hell when the lights go green? He isnt, is he? He wont even attempt to becuase for all he knows, its just a Corsa 1.2 next to him and thus not worth the fuel.

If you'd pulled up next to him in something that looks the part he might be more inclined to give it a go but he's no more likely to want to whoop a Corsa 1.2 than he is to want to whoop a Renault Espace.

Ignore the 99 or newer bit and find a mint Volvo 850 or V70 T5. THey're dead cheap to insure for some reason, and bloody quick ;)
