Spec me a sleeper.

But the whole sleeper thing is great in theory but I cant see how it works in practice. Say you pull up next to an Audi A4 3.0 Quattro in the Corsa and want to embarras the driver - something youve said is the purpose of the sleeper.

Trouble is, your car looks like a Corsa 1.2 LS. Why is the A4 driver going to take off like a bat of a hell when the lights go green? He isnt, is he? He wont even attempt to becuase for all he knows, its just a Corsa 1.2 next to him and thus not worth the fuel.

If you'd pulled up next to him in something that looks the part he might be more inclined to give it a go but he's no more likely to want to whoop a Corsa 1.2 than he is to want to whoop a Renault Espace.

Personally for me its never been about beating people of the lights for exactly the reason you say. I prefer using the potential when on the move. For example, coming back from a track day last year I had a Civic Type R bumper to bumper. I was doing 40 (the limit) with him looking to overtake when it went to a national speed limit (70 in this case) As it opened up to a dual carriage way I kept to the left letting him move to overtake. When he started to gain I accelerated to a little over 70 keeping him well behind. Yes its childish but I drove within the limits of the car and road and at the same time had a bit of fun with a hot hatch.

Lots of crap in this thread but a Volvo S70 T5 is a good suggestion if you can get insurance. Bland looks but monster performance.

The whole idea of buying a car for TLGP is silly anyway unless you are content with racing every chav you come across ;) It's better for motorways/dual carriageways when you can occasionally take people by surprise ;) Quite amusing if it's not dangerous

Those I know with sleepers actually have them because they're "Under the radar" - Try doing 90 down a dual carriageway in your 530i and everyone will see you. Try it in a SAAB 9000 and nobody will notice.

To pre-empt the inevitable lashback, that is not an anti-BMW comment. It is merely a note that they are much more 'prominent'.

'01 laguna, 2.0T.
Fairly quick and the engines aint bad (165-170bhp iirc and insurance group 11/12), spacious too.
My old man just picked one up, lots of gadgets, cost him 3.5k with 70k on the clock.

Using your logic why did everyone really go for it when I was in my 100E, a small two-tone Ford from 1961? Boy racers, big saloons, Porsches, the works. It didn't even look fast. I just had to make sure I had enough power to get past them if they got ahead of me :)

Becuase there are probably hardly any 100E's left NOT in enthusiasts hands. If you see a 100E, its more likely to be packing something than its not.

Same with mint Novas. If you see a Mint Nova, its probably special. The rest are dead. But not Corsas.

Make your mind up, it was bland, boring and un-noticeable last week :p

Compared to a SAAB it's a Lime Green Diablo spitting flames and oversteering through a field of kittens.

Most normal looking cars (I.e. pretty much anything shy of an Impreza) are sleepers to the general public.

My neighbour reckons my 330d is a sleeper in spite of its chunky bumpers and 18s.

get a 2 litre focus and turbo charge it, add rs injectors ect, they can make about 350 bhp and cost less then 2k to mod.

Good good, just checking. I better ditch the suit for some baggy tracksuit bottoms, wear some jewellery or should I say "bling", as well as wear a baseball cap. ;)

For what it's worth, I did cane a 530 the other day :D Innit!
