Trouble is, your car looks like a Corsa 1.2 LS. Why is the A4 driver going to take off like a bat of a hell when the lights go green? He isnt, is he? He wont even attempt to becuase for all he knows, its just a Corsa 1.2 next to him and thus not worth the fuel.
If you'd pulled up next to him in something that looks the part he might be more inclined to give it a go but he's no more likely to want to whoop a Corsa 1.2 than he is to want to whoop a Renault Espace.
Personally for me its never been about beating people of the lights for exactly the reason you say. I prefer using the potential when on the move. For example, coming back from a track day last year I had a Civic Type R bumper to bumper. I was doing 40 (the limit) with him looking to overtake when it went to a national speed limit (70 in this case) As it opened up to a dual carriage way I kept to the left letting him move to overtake. When he started to gain I accelerated to a little over 70 keeping him well behind. Yes its childish but I drove within the limits of the car and road and at the same time had a bit of fun with a hot hatch.
