Hi all,

Just after a few suggestions. I do a fair few miles (min 60 per day) but am going to need a new car as the gearbox on the Xedos is whining like the missus with no storecards.

I am living on 28mpg and that really is the minimum I can cope with day to day. The run is 25 miles NSL, of which 19 is dual carriageway followed by 6 miles through traffic - 3 miles of crawl and 3 miles around 40mph.

I want something with a bit more power than the Xedos 6.

So far, looking at:

Honda Accord 2.2iVtec
Honda Prelude 2.2 Vtec
Rover 600 Turbo

Have jacked in the idea of a diesel, principally as I'd hate it.

Any other suggestions??? I have a Mk1MR2 for fun btw.

Adam

I get on average 28-29mpg from my 2.2 Prelude.

That's a mixture of motorway driving, town driving, and NSL driving - probably the same mixture as yours is!

£1k will get you a 4g (92-96) model.

If you go for a UK model, you'll get 185bhp, 4 wheel steering, A/C, cruise control, sunroof all as standard.

If you go for a Japanese import, you'll get "197" bhp, but it needs to be run on V-Power (more expensive, so compared to standard fuel you'll be getting less comparative "MP£"), you'll get climate control, electric folding mirrors, and optional of 2WS/4WS, sunroof, C/C. Plus insurance will be slightly higher, despite the fact that JDM models share 99% of components with UKDM models.

I would suggest a UK model, for the ability to run on 95 ron, the performance isn't that different between the two (hence the "197" in quotes above ;)) and slightly lower insurance.

The Prelude is also very comfortable IMO - I've gone to Scotland in it from London in one day without any hiccups - I couldn't even drive my step dad's Vectra from London to Colchester without getting a sore back!!

Mondeo V6. Like an Accord only actually goes fast.

My old fella has an ST24 - otherwise I would have been interested. He's in his 60's, it just would be....wrong somehow...

scrub my post as you already have a Xedos 6, how about a xedos 9 with a supercharged Miller 2.3 engine?

23 mpg on average I believe

I dont really understand what difference this makes. It's hardly more old man than a Xedos, is it? I have the same (well, similar) car as my Dad and it's... well a non issue.

It is a consideraion tbh - just I know it wouldn't be good compared to the ST. Just after a few more suggestions as well.

It's more or less the same as the ST. The only difference is 20mm lower suspension. The ST is nothing special compared to the rest of the Mondeo range. Besides, £1k gets an ST anyway now.

A Mk1 or a very very big mile Mk2 - didn't the lower models have rear drums as well??? Haven't found anything reasonable spec with the 6 pot for my money I'm afraid.

No, no V6 Mondeo ever had drums. There is also no such thing as a Mk1 ST either. You will easily get a 97 ST24 Saloon for £1k, but it will be missing the bodykit.

Fairy nuff - must admit the old fella having one has put me off. May look at a Mk2 Ghia X instead - seems a better option for the money.

Why not just use the Mk1 everyday?
Or even sell it and buy something better for the total sum of money? Running two cars is a PITA - I did it for a while, ends up costing a fortune!

Couple of reasons, primarily due to the wife getting her licence back in June and the MR2 currently under 'project' conditions - sorn in my garage until probably Jan/Feb.

I like a nice comfy cruise to and from work and the opportunity to hoon at the weekend - the MR2 simply isn't pratical anyway. The 1st 6 miles of my journey, the power is important as if I get stuck behind something slow it has a massive knock-on effect on my commute as getting to my junction of the A19 near South Shields is a tight timeframe. Too late and the queues are massive, too early and I'm waiting outside work for ages. My timing is normally pretty good :)

Rover :)

Can pick a 620Ti for peanuts. Leather, alloys, 200bhp.

I'd also recommend an 800 Vitesse. You get branded Recaro seats in this one :)

Fuel economy is pretty damn good for a 'fast' car. I've been commuting in my 420 Turbo (same engine) for the last few weeks and have been hitting 35+ mpg very easily.

get the ghia x, but dont hold out for 28mpg lol. I have similar commute conditions and tend to get a far bit less.....28mpg is just below motorway cruising at 85-90 return

EDIT

although when I think NSL, i think twisty country roads with lots of acceleration and decelleration, dual carraigeway with cruise at 60 or 70 will see 28+ and then itll drop to 23ish in the traffic

would you be getting 35+ if it wasnt clear motorway, and instead either NSL roads where you'd be booting it most probably or stop start traffic though ?
