Do we need high street banks?

as in you get no business rewards for having so many accounts, however you do create your self huge amounts of hassle and wasted man hours.

A true businessman has a bank account in all highstreet banks.

So

HSBC-HSBC
BARCLAYS-BARCLAYS
NATWEST-NATWEST

I find it hard to believe that a businessman keeps his eggs all in one basket.

What about businessmen who aren't "true"?

-Plumber: That'll be £63.44 inc VAT please
-Me: Sure. Bank transfer OK?
-Plumber: What?
-Me: its instant and you dont have to wait 5 working days for their money to appear
-Plumber: OK, whatever. Wait a min while I phone up the office to get the details......... Here you go.
-Me: I'm with Lloyds, so I need your Lloyds account.
-Plumber: We don't have a Lloyds account, we're with Natwest
-Me: WTF?!? easyrider off of OcUK said all true businessmen have an incoming payments account with every bank under the sun.
-Plumber: I don't have time for this ****. That's now 61mins I've been here, so another £40+VAT on the bill. Cheque or cash only please.

There's a lot you can't automate, it will make you accountant or yourself cry as you try to balance 15 accounts rather than one, with 15 times the amount of paperwork. More charges as most banks charge for company accounts.

You automate it.

I have two accounts that merely funnel others.

Banks are only interested in Monies paid through.

Lump sums are in the correct areas with interest to match.

No,

Thats the beauty of bank transfer and standing order and DD

The beauty of a bank transfer is that it gets me higher interest

And you can open accounts on-line without sending any id off?

Why does this seam like a massive source of abuse and with no bank so your internet account is made via post, again either risk losing id or not have one. or people can easily make an account under your name an get a couple of dozen cc's :/

I don't have 15 accounts

This was just an over exegerated example.

which you used to prove instant payment which unless you have an account with every single bank, then it's not instant and no quicker than a cheque. Also is far more hassle than a cheque due to customers not knowing what a bank transfer is and if it's safe. You just have to look at MM to realise how many people aren't clued on on bank transfers.

BTW cheques bounce,

Transfers work and are easier to follow up.

I just dont understand this thread, again, tell me what i do in the event of paying in large cash sums and/or cheques. I would not be happy being asked to post 5 figure cash sums into an automated machine.

You don't need to.

How big are we talking?

If its the cost of living then why bank it?

Cheques are dealt with via admin.

Its easy to make money go away an appear in your bank account without the hassle of walking the streets with the stuff in your suit jacket!

Use your imagination.

Give it your mother or something!

Let her go the bank!

Treat her to a afternoon meal with her fireinds for the trouble!

Not everyone has internet banking. Yes, we still need them.

Who doesn't have a phone?

As for cheques, you can pay them in with machines as well, I've done it for the last few years. There are definitely certain things we need banks for but not for as many as we did in the past.

How does my getting my mother (whom i rarely see) go remove the need for the bank being there?

Its not the cost of living, its just how people pay for cars, if i said bank transfer 90% of people would be scared off or just look at me blankly, so i accept all payment.
Tradesmen would laugh at you, i have a lot of tradesmen friends, most of which dont even have a computer, at all, let alone any clue of how to operate online banking.

If you are employed with a PAYE scheme that your company puts your monthly wages into your account then yeah, you will probably never need to go into a bank.

But think of every shops in the highstreet, people pay by cash, newsagent, pubs and restaurants take in cash. And all those cash have to go somewhere, the big chains may have security vans to pick up the daily takings, small shops have to take the cash into the local bank and put it in their business account. You can't exactly do that over the internet can't you?

What about asking for a loan, or mortgage? I suspect the majority of people would go in and see someone for a face to face talk over this. Not to mention the bank will need to see a lot of ID, employment details before approving the loan and can't exactly do that over the webcam now can't you?

High Street banks are staying, as long as cash is around.
