****ATi 3850 & 3870 Ramblings****

??

Quick question will the 3870 be ok to crossfire on a asus p5w dh deluxe. I am sure they will but just checking before i buy. I think my trusty x1900xtx is giving up the fight now. My pc keeps hanging when i play call of duty 4 multiplayer. Done a format reinstall updated mobo bios and motherboard drivers and still the same. When i run ati tool artifact finder at stock speeds after around 7-8 minutes it starts to artifact every 10 seconds or so. Temps all seem fine gpu running at 78 degrees.

I'd like to know the answer to this too thanks :)

well was changing my mind and going to go with the ati option but now seen reviews definitly getting the gt as theres quite a difference in games from what ive seen.especially with a lot of gt being available in a few days time.

Inq warning...

Now here's were it counts people. 50,000 G92s at launch vs 500,000 RV670s. Enthusiasts and suppliers are going to find they can get hold of an HD3870 or an HD3850 and can't get hold of an 8800GT. People will want to upgrade or build and that's money in AMD/ATi's pocket. This is the anti-paper-launch.

Edit: Just read the Anandtech review. 2 HD3850s in Crossfire equalling an 8800GTX. I know the GT is very close to the GTX but that is performance not to be sniffed at. Would have liked to see more tests with AA, as that seems to be where the performance falls down.

The temps on the 3870 are amazing though...

There are a lot more HIS due in today/tomorrow. Sapphire shipped late so not expected until Friday Evening or Monday.

So, does this mean that if I order one today, when the stock comes in tomorrow it will be shipped and get here Monday?

I think the 8800GT temperature will be very dependent on case ventilation, as it doesn't exhaust outside the case. In an open case they might be very similar. In a closed case the HD3870's going to win.

3870 is 10% faster than 2900xt overall
8800GT is 10-15% faster than 3870 overall
thats the way i see it from anandtechs review, with driver improvements i see it becoming very close between the 3870 and 8800GT maybe only 10% overall

average price of a 3870 is £164
average price of a 8800GT is £188

these should go down to

3870 - £144
8800GT - £168

in 2 weeks

for the 10-15% performance gain your paying £24 and 10-15% of £144 is £14 - £22

so the cards are priced correctly in ratio to their performance and to say one is a better buy over the other is ridiculous both are the exact same, although the ATI card does run cooler, use a lot less power and has 10.1 support, if you add up all the facts then if you want the best bang for buck both cards are the same performance wise, now it just depends on whether you are willing to spend that extra 17% for that extra 10-15% performance, ati slightly edge it due to the price just now, so if the nvidia cards were to drop by £3 they would be equal in bang for buck terms
