****ATi 3850 & 3870 Ramblings****

but with my Pro overclocked to what it's at there really is no point in me moving over. Yes, I have a noisier, more power hungry card that just lost another bit of value with this release but it's still not worth me selling and moving over.
thats what i think also m8... :)

Tbh I think people will probably go with the 3870 if the GT isn't back in stock soon and just pocket the difference and try to clock it a bit. :)

Yeah, Nvidia's hard launch has jellied fairly quickly :D.

No point in losing a bit of money to upgrade in noise, heat and power but no performance gain :).

When I have time I will try and push my core up to 700Mhz on this Pro. It started scaling with voltage increases before so I hope to push it. If these HD38-- cards have voltage play as this card has then I think it might be interesting.

Both cards (3870 and 8800GT) have merits.

The 3870 uses less power, has a decnet cooler, and has HDMI output which includes 5.1 sound. It is also cheaper and should have a better short-term supply chain.

The 8800GT is noticeably faster for games. It's main weakness is the poor cooler, but it is single slot so will appeal to more people.

The HD3870 beats the 8800GT in almost every area bar the most important -performance.

For this reason alone the GT will be more popular. I like the featureset of the 3870, but the reason most people buy high end graphics cards is to play games. The 8800GT simply plays games better.

I agree with all of that. Well put mate.

Ordered a 3870! Cheers OcUK :D

The key selling points for me are the quiet fan, and the fact it's available now.

Finally I can play Bioshock! It's been sitting on my shelf taunting me.

I'm also curious if it can fix an ongoing issue I've had with my Nvidia card (that is too complicated to explain).

In a normal market the 3870 would be more competitive, the problem at the moment is that although these are priced as mid range cards, an area where price is important, they currently perform like high range cards an area where people just want the best performance they can get.

Once we see some new true performance cards things should hopefully settle down a bit, of course by that stage how these cards stack up against each other may have changed, with driver updates and price changes.

The 3850 should do well enough for those looking to game on a tight budget, although it will depend on how the 256meg 8800GT performs and is priced.

I like this box design:

you'll get ATI 8.43 Driver with them cards which is 7.11 beta drivers.

I would say it's a way below the 7.11 and it seem to be for the 2400/2600AGP cards !

I hacked some 7.10's yesterday for the 3870's but they were no better than the supplied 8.43 !

Right... i just dont get this....

Asus Bitz Formula motherboard and a pair of xfired 3870's

In XP Pro 32 bit...
I get good scores in 3dmark 01 (3dmark 06 suddenly will not run??)

Put the things on Vista and I get rel problems...
Using 3dmark2001 as a simple measure running the nature test (its just a quick way of seeing whats going on)
If i run with a single card (i.e. xfire off in the CC) I get a significantly higher frame rate than when xfire is enabled????

Crysis performance is absolute pants - i dont get any crashes even in xfire mode.

What is going on here? I'm so frustrated i'm on the verge of taking these things back.

Whats there aa performance like on these as it was totaly appauling on the 2900 pro @ xt i had, noticed a huge difference when i got a 8800gt.
