Very Challenging Spec

a C2D E2140 at 1.6GHz will easily overclock to about 2.2 (ish) on stock cooling and volts, whereupon it will trounce a A64 X2 4000+

:)
That's a big increase, I wouldn't want to blow up the new PC. Could you not overclock the Athlon too or are Intels more robust?

MM atm? yantorsen you are talking in code. I'm new here!

Members Market, you won't have access to it yet, someone else might be willing to buy it for you though, and then you give them the money.

The intel core2duo's are fantasic overclockers, and you wont blow it up (that made me laugh when i read it) my computer is over a year old, stock it comes 2.4, its running at 3.2 fine. its blazing fast,

if you got something like an Artic Cooling Freezer Pro7 you could even push the cpu more and still have great temps, anyone that buys a X2 Cpu is a fool these days. no offence :p

Mines 800mhz increase, and if i have better cooling i could run it at 3600mhz 1200mhz increase, clock for clock the intells are 20% (give or take) faster then the X2's

Cheers for the advice guys.

Would the Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L Motherboard be up to the task? I don't think I'd want to push it too far though.

the DS3 is a great overclocking board, you will easyily be able to get a Core2 cpu clocked high and very stable.

My only question is: why do so many people spec the Intel Core 2 Duo E2140 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.60 when you can have a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4000+ 2.10GHz based system for the same price? The AMD consistently out scores the Intel according to a certain hardware sites CPU comparison page.

Firstly, clock for clock they are better.

Secondly, the overclock like a demon, put a decent 3rd part cooler on top any you'll break 3Ghz easily i think (my 2.1Ghz E6400 hits 3.6Ghz on air).

Thirdly, it puts you on the Socket 775 platform with upgrade options to quad cores when you next need an upgrade.

I havent seen any OCing info on the P31-DS3, but the DS3s in general are reasonable OCing boards, plus with the lower stock FSB you can punch it up to 333Mhz (supported for the E6x50 series ect) and get 2.6Ghz already without breaking a sweat on the board. May well be worth paying a small amount more for the higher multipliers on the E2160 or E2180s as that'd get you 3Ghz and 3.3Ghz respectively with 333FSB (providing they push that far, which they should).

The P31-DS3 is the cheapest 775 mobo i could find short of going for the much poorer performing Asrock's. Guaranteed Penryn compatibility too, which is more than you can say for most other boards in its price range.

Why do people hate me? :(

My spec is a complete working pc - as mentioned, i've never specced a spec with an OS - thats up to the OP and everybody does it this way? (and your dreaming at this budget)

I've got a couple more posts then my post count in reality ;)
