Blood Doners

the pin ***** on the finger feels like any pin ***** on the finger!
i find it a weird sensation when the needle goes in, and it aches a bit - but i've been told thats because i'm a wuss (and i bruise easily anyway) :D
when my better half went with me, he was done much quicker than me, and had no problems
 
You can actually give blood every 4 months, and it will be a pint (near enough) the first time you go. Sometimes they have crisps aswell as biscuits too! :D

nope you can't feel anything, unless the tube rests on you, then it just feels warm.

next time I go I'm going to ask about platelet donation and check I'm on the bone marrow register.

I filled the form in on-line about a year ago, but haven't heard anything about it.
 
Haven't been since earlier this year. It's not that I didn't want to, but I suffered what they call a 'needlestick' injury - I pricked my finger on something I shouldn't basically - and they said I'd have to go several months before donating again, to give any possible risk of infection chance to show itself.

They said they'd send me another session invite when I was eligible again - should be in the next couple of months. I'm keen to start going again - I got my 10 donations award last year and I want to start working towards the next milestone!

I started going after Dad needed transfusions during his cancer treatment - feels like I'm giving something back in return for someone helping Dad :)

I'm the opposite - getting anything out of my left arm is next to impossible, but it comes out my right arm like a bloody river ...

I don't have that problem I obviously eat to much meat. The last 3 times they haven't had time to start the stop watch before it's hit the bottom :D

:rolleyes: the chances of you being called are very slim. If you do yes it is painful to get a sample. But then again it's unlikely you will match. But you could save someones life. Isn't that worth a few weeks of pain.

the way i see it, if it was me, or a member of my family who needed a donor, i'd want people to have a caring, giving attitude
which is why i give blood, why i am on the bone marrow donor register, and why i carry a donor card :)

Me too. The mobile unit visits here every 4 months, I went the week before last :). You also get shiny things: :D

yep, I also carry a donor card. I have also told my parents, as they can over ride a donor card :mad:
Not sure if I'm on the marrow donor, I don't think I am. As I filled the form in online but never heard anything else and it seems you have to go some where to register?

i think part of the bone marrow registry process judges you on blood type and donor suitability - if you're accepted onto the register you get a card (similar to the blood donor card), but it's worth chasing up next time you give blood :)

i am looking into writing an advance directive - i'd hate it for things to be done to my body (or not done) against my wishes
my man and my parents know my opinion on the issue, and i'm confident they'd uphold them :)

At the moment, no! I probably will seriously consider it when im in a full time secure job, but a few weeks when in education can mean the difference between a fail or pass (well it does for me):)
 
But even if they call you up you don't have to do it. And if the timings not good I'm sure you can talk and discus it with them. If you are a match I'm sure they could hold off. If your in exams or anything.

But you can't register till your 18 anyway.
 
I would like to give blood, however i got a tattoo in june and I think you have to wait a year (iirc) before you can donate.

6 months, same as piercings (though it did used to be a year)
(i time my donations so i can still carry on with body modification!)
