The Witcher-Official Thread

You need 3 runes to create a new silver sword, or 3 ores for a steel one. You don't so much 'reforge' the sword as just make a new one - you can sell or drop your old one. You'll be able to acquire better swords as the game progresses via other means.

Edit: Note you have to see a blacksmith to buy the new sword (and it's expensive).

Is their a demo of this out?

i want to try it before i go buy it tommorow, one thing thats bothering me though, i love playing rpg's, KOTOR, Guildwars, Final Fantasy were some of my best times and some of the longest lasting games i have played. But if its anything like Oblivion then dont think i will buy it as that was a total letdown for me.

It's nothing like Oblivion. As a fan of story-heavy RPGs (I've got nothing against linearity - narrative ***) I disliked Oblivion intensely. The Witcher is sublime in comparison.

Ok, im stuck again (posted a thread about the beast etc etc, changed story routs to complete it in the end, don;t think thats giving anything away)

Couple of gripes too, it's running like a dog on an 88ultra and a quad core with 4gig ram (only when there are a lot of etities on the screen) It's unbelievably FULL of ghosting, to the point of making me feel sick, i'll try to get some screens up at some point, anyone else had this issue? i patched up and updated my gfx drivers, but same issue.

now for the *****SPOILERS*****

I think chapter 3 just finished, but anyway, i'm facing the kikimore Queen, and i just cannot dammage her in any way, and more to the point, she kills me in 1 hit. So, i hide behind a rock and throw fire at her (spell 4, cant remember the name) i also have a rubedo dominant swallow potion, a rubedo dominant tawny owl potion, and the potion that makes your spells more potant) and the flame spell is also upgraded as fully as it can be (not on gold talents yet though) after flaming her about 10 times, i can just about notice that i have done some dammage to her, wtf???!

So i though't i'd try and run away, and then run into literally hundreds of the workers and warriors, the flame spell dispatches these in 1 shot (2 for the warriors) and i can get through them all the way into the room, but they just keep appearing... and then i get stuck in the middle of them, killing about 50-60 of them, and the queen catches me up... grr How do i pull the roof down... please for the love of pete, tell me!

Highlight to read :D

PS, im playing it on hard, so don't get any of these fancy flaming sward attacks, and REALLY need to be up on the alchemy side of things, great fun, but damned hard!

EDIT: here's a link to the blurring, it's aweful, that's just running down the street!

Ignore the top of the pic being duplicated, that's just naff photobucket not being able to resize the resolution correctly.

Started playing this game last night, as im out of things to play now. I must say, this is one hell of a game. The cinematics, gameplay and graphics just make it an outstanding play ! :)

^ Its taught me one thing.... dont trust reviews... I used to swear by then now I am wondering what good games I have missed :(

I cant beleive these reviews, I have never stuck by an RPG since Baldurs gate series...

I am still playing Witcher and think the game is superb!

Used to be a long time subscriber to PC Format (back in the day) but gave them and every other mag the flick once the internet got big. Don't trust any game journos now. Its best to read user reviews, the more the better, to get an accurate view on games.

As for their ridiculous score....I guess CD Projekt never sent them any choccies for christmas :p

Got it yesterday, really enjoying it, which is unusual as I only really play multiplayer games these days. Great story, nice combat system and looks lovely.

Plus it's nice having a proper 18 rated game for a change.

Amen brother :)

On the subject of swords. I was under the impression you mainly use either the steel sword or silver sword in your main 2 top slots. The other lower slots seem to be a waste of time, is this correct or in the later game do you end up using weopons in these slots? If I understand correctly these lower weopons dont use the witcher styles?

Right am going back into act 2 for the afternoon or until the pain in my back/leg gets too much :)

i think the dialogue in the game could be better... unfortunately.

Theres an example in act 2 when you're speaking to an npc woman. Seems utterly illogical how you get what you want ;). And you would have no idea it was possible from the conversations..

Its weird because you might think that when talking to a random npc that they will say the same thing and repeat the same dialogue so once you exhaust the dialogue choices you dont speak to them again. (thats how it works for a lot of rpgs - their dialogue is pretty much preset)

but in this instance (and proably others) THEY dont : you get extra choices! No idea why though. (not a main character just a lowlevel npc) So not sure how it works..could be random.

hrmm maybes this is a good thing... (well it was at the time :D)

Basically it adds weird kindoff DEPTH to the meeting of another npc but masquerades as the usual standard (shallow?) responses you would get from a 'no-name' npc.

Ill have to check whether its like this for some of the other really minor npcs. If it is then GLORY BE to Heaven because i will be dumbstruck! add +7% to the score if it is like this tbh.

I felt so strong about some of the reviews that I was banned for a couple of days for swearing:D first ban ever

All the forums I visit have very active positive Witcher threads. When I say positive, this may be somewhat of an understatement in that it has been a while since I have seen a game receive such glowing praise from its player base. Gamers whom have bought this game on the whole absolutely love it. So far this has been my game of the year even though I confess RPG's are my favourite genre, and there is only Mass Effect left to take this spot.

Apparently the dialogue was cut and shortened by about 20% on top of the translation for polish, which has caused problems like that. Good ol' Atari, eh?

Don't know if this has been posted yet but apparently there's a ini setting to disable autosaves.

We can all agree that up to this point this is one hell of a game. But the loading times, whetever it takes 1min or 20 secs to load still feels too much as a turn off for most.
Well, here's a solution (which you can keep once the 1.2 patch arrives, that promises to eliminate the horrible loading times) which will decrease most loading times to up to 50% depending on your system.
This will remove the autosaving feature which you get almost everywhere where there is a 'loading bar'.

1. First know your installation path to the game. Replace the X with your current path to where you installed the game.
Go to game installation folder which should be something like this:
X:\XXX\The Witcher\System

Mine is at
H:\Games\The Witcher\System

2. Create a txt file inside the system folder by right clicking in the system folder and selecting 'New -> Text Document' (This may vary from system to system, but this is by using Windows XP). Name your created file to:
player.ini

3. Now open your newly created file with Notepad if you haven't already. Add these lines in it and save:
[Server Options]
Disable AutoSave=1

4. Start the game and enjoy less loading times!

I haven't tried this yet but I've got it ready for when I get home. Will let you know how it goes.

yep im aware of that. Atm im experimenting with a change in the ini file for the text dialogue. Changing =short to =Long (i think im not at home to check)

This other thing which im talking about re: this particular minor npc is weird and possibly a very good thing. Should i say who it is as its kinda a spoiler if you havent got middle act 2
