"PC Games" Forum!

Today I bought Crysis for the PC. Its the first game I have bought in years for the PC. After a lot of messing about, installing new drivers and the likes of.,then setting up my game, tweaking graphics to make it playable. I realised something. My time is too precious to be messing about setting up a game when all I actually want to do is play it. For me PC gaming is dead. I just enjoy the simplicity of putting a disk in and playing.

If it's the first game in years then surely your PC is rather outdated?

So I wouldn't have expected it to run too well. ;)

I didn't expect it to run well, as we know, its most overspecced game in the world. More than playable for me on low, which is all I wanted. My point being, I just got fed up of having to mess about with things I just take for granted.

Another example is BF2. I loved that game, my system can play that great. I reinstalled it the other month, installed stacks of patches for it. Only for it to now take me around 25 minutes for me to actually join a game by time which the round is pretty much over. Add to that it was being a git for me to actually manage to get in the same game as my mates etc. I just give up in the end and just wondered why I have to go through so much messing just to shoot some Chinese forces with my mates. Back in the day I would have worked harder to get it working. Now I just expect it to work properly all the time. And I know BF2 is one of the worst examples as that game is just plain broken nowadays.

As for upgrades, I only ever cared about them when I used to play Quake 3. I just wanted to try and gain that extra edge. 125fps constant was the magic number ;]

PCs are better purely for the fact that they are not just games machines.

However, if web development, programming etc are of no interest to you then it is fair to say that PC gaming and console gaming are equal. Both have good and bad points and arguing which one is better is the same as comparing a helicopter to a plane, both do similar things but in totally different ways. It all comes down to personal preferance.

I think the only thing that seperates PC gamers from console gamers is their attitude. Pc gamers talk about their games, any problems and solutions, mods etc, whereas 50% of the console chat is about which which console is best.

Personally, I am a gamer. I own a decent PC, a Wii, PS1/2, DSLite, ive just sorted out my attic and found my SNES, MegaDrive and my N64 which i will be playing on when I am next off work. I am looking at getting a 360 before xmas and maybe a PS3 if the prices ever stop being so high.

I am a true gamer, I care only about the games, not the hardware. After all, its the games that are important to either consoles or PCs, hell, I would still rather play Goldeneye on the N64 than a lot of the newer games on either format.

360 and PS3 in the office along with the PC. Wii in the living room.

:)

How many people do that though? Not many I'll bet. Like I said, most consoles spend their lives in the living room.

Dunno if this article has been posted yet, but thought it was worth a read for all the console fans: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7096891.stm

Personally I think the PC will always be king because it's an open platform. I do what I want to do on my PC, not what Microsoft/Sony decide to let me.

I have a PC, XB360, PS3, Wii and a variety of handhelds. I bought them because for me, each excels at a particular thing - PC for MMORPGs and first person shooters (where the detail can be cranked waaaaay beyond any console and KB/mouse provides the best control), XB for most non-FPS games, Wii for gaming with the family / friends (and super mario galaxy!) with the PS3 bringing up the rear for blu-ray playback (though Ratchett and Clank is getting a lot of attention at the moment).

Given the amount that you'll pay for games, consoles and reasonable PCs are cheap enough to have more than one option. If you can't afford that then you make compromises and find the line-of-best-fit that suits your gaming preference. Don't kid yourself into thinking that you've got the best of all worlds with one console however.

Probably one of the best things I've seen said on this forum in a while.

360 is great, Because of the games it's seen. But that said, It won't see all the great games. Which is where the PS3, PC and Wii come in.

They will all see amazing games. And if you have 1 console, You'll be missing atleast something along the way you're going to wish you could play.

For me, I have a PC without a good graphics card, and lack a wii.

I want to play The Witcher and The new Mario.

Loving the 360, But i wish I could have everything :D

Alas, I'm lacking those kinds of funs.

the only that I have with consoles is that they don't have supreme commander on them.. that is a right pain in the bum.. The RTS genre is the only reason right now to own a PC

RTS for me is PC based too. If this mouse and keyboard thing works out on the PS3, then that may change. But it's an interface thing. And you just cant beat Keyboard and mouse when it comes to RTS.

And it works both ways, those with just a PC can't kid themselves either that they have the best of all worlds, clearly they don't. Once consoles have the guts to make proper driving sims then I can do away with a gaming PC, as console gaming would then give me everything I want from gaming :)

Ah, Good point. I overlooked the fact he said console. gaming machine would have been better (PS3, 360, Wii, PC, PS2) :D

/shrug, only because the console manufacturers bribe the games developers into making games only for their platform. If I had my way, these bribes would be made illegal and consoles would have to compete fairly with the PC :)

I'd like to see what could be done with the Wiimote - grouping units and setting waypoints could be frighteningly quick. There would be a lack of hotkeys, but seeing as anyone you would fight would be in the same boat, that wouldn't be no bad thing. The inclusion of gestures could be interesting and moving the screen about analogue stick stylee while being free to use the Wimote would be neat.

Thing is you see... this is OcUK. Its a PC hardware enthusiast website.

I think it would not be too much of a step to say that people (like myself) come here because they LIKE to tweek and tinker with things to push what they have to its limits. I like that feeling when that £800 setup i made for a friend is faster and more featured then top of the range £2000 premade one they were looking to get.

I own all the consoles and a now mid range-ish PC. If an exclusive come out on one, then its exclusive... not much you can do about that. If it is multi-format, then i get it for the one its most suted to (price / performance / controls / special features).

Usualy i end up getting FPS's for the PC as they are ~£10 cheaper, modifiable and nothing can beat a KB&M for that feeling of control. Other things tend to fall on the 360 as my prefered platform.

Saying that one is outright better then the other is foolhardy. That said, these are interesting times. The Wii has really opened up a novel control meathod that works and the PS3 can use KB&M.

Ironicaly PC are becoming more console like and consoles are getting more PC like. :D

Bribes? What the extra cash to make it exclusive is a bribe now is it? not forgetting big games make more money on console :) No wonder PC is left behind, shrug all you like

we can only hope, it would be great to have a decent RTS on the PS3 or 360..

I've been considering buying a PC for just this reason alone..
its quite supprising on this web site that some people have not got a completely kick ass PC. due to the nature of the site

Seems very dull and boring in there, all wanting mass effect. and talk of assassins creed next year, oh how i love the fact us console gamers come first, we may not have crysis, but with mass effect on the verge! who cares?

Im glad i made the right choice!

-Neoni! - Happy xbox owner.

maybes its so dull and boring cos they're all off playing their games, since theres a massive library of them compared to your consoles?

You could just reverse what you said about mass effect, and replace it with crysis. Theres plenty of other decent games for PC

Got both, prefer the PC tbh, games aint what they used to be to me though, play pro-evo and dota(warcraft3) and nothin else really

Thats how bribes work. Bit like British Aerospace giving cash to the Saudi royal family in order to "exclusively" supply jets to Saudi Arabia .... which never happened btw :p

Shame that Microsoft don't actually make money from consoles - wonder why...
