HMRC loses 15m peoples bank details.

The sooner this government and its agencies get their act together the better. IF you could get a figure of all the fraud caused by gov. security lapses like this, it would be very interesting reading.

I now have no faith in them whatsoever and I am currently looking at what other information they hold on me and my family, who has access to it and why they need to have it.

I dont think it would be unreasonable for a securicor type vehicle with a small unmarked police escort to transport such sensitive information if and when it NEEDS to be moved.

If I were the leader of a organised criminal organisation with the resources to pull it off, I might plot to recover from TNT (stop reffering to Royal Mail, get your facts right) the data for sale onwards to fraudsters. Imagine the black market value for such information?!

First and formost, lets get things straight. I never once said they were sent out via Royal Mail. Please refer to my post. It was sent out via HMRC internal mail, where that goes is none of my responsability, none of my knowledge and neither do I care.

I don't work in the same building as HMRC employees, I work for a company which supports them in their IT systems. Our mail is also collected via TNT (though we have a process to send confidential stuff neither by email, or by mail), I don't know the process for them so didn't care to comment.

It certainly wouldn't be unreasonable for a securicor type van either, you are correct. But in terms of systems, there are systems in place for data to be encrypted and sent via long distance without the use of CD's already in place. This employee did it off their own backs, massively incorrectly I might add and wiill no doubt, and rightly be treated like they should be. I believe the police will be getting involved.

In terms of the black market, what is the going rate for every child in Britain details?

The articles don't mention if it's TNT Post (non trackable internal mail) or TNT Express (trackable consignments)

If it's the latter I'll do a system search for it at work tomorrow :p

Astonishing! Talk about a political own goal. Gordon Brown must be absolutely seething lol................Then again anyone who has regular dealings with HMRC will not really be that suprised. I've personally had a total nightmare with them & found them to be incompetent beyond belief.

Sorry for the lack of clarity in my post. I was not reffering to you but to these:

I think the incompetence really comes from sending 25M sets of important details by bog standard royal mail.

I bet the CD is on the floor in a Royal Mail sorting office.

I read every ones post carefully. In future though, I will be extra careful in my own proof-reading to ensure I don't say something that could be misinterpreted! Much like the average politician does these days.

It's been mentioned but I would like to stress it.

This bunch of retards want our DNA, along with every other piece of information about us too.

I bet you, they'll go ahead with the scheme, then some 17yr old from North Korea will hack into the database (or just have an employee mail a CD via TNT ) and get my details, and in 20 years time I'll meet my clone, Kim Jong Murf, all because this government managed to scare the witless into such a draconian scheme that has no benefits, curtails civil liberties and is open to such rife abuse and incompetency as keeping the entire database on a ****ing CD.

No worries, I dont mean to come across harsh in any way to you.

Ok, so now hands up.... who wants our finger prints, DNA, e.t.c on record with the government?

Thought so.

Time for Labor to get out. These are the people that want YOUR information, through the ID card scheme, and cannot even look after it properly. These fags can't even keep information on a poxy CD from going astray.

Whats the government got to do with this even if it was the conservatives or someone else in power the same thing would have probably happened as it would be the same employees who sent the data out

The Labor party puts in place the routines for handling such data.

edit: was for The_One

I'm genuniely concerned about this. Is the information likely to be encrypted?

Nope, just simple password protection according to BBCnews - if you are of a family that recieves child benefits or close enough to that, I'd start worrying. I hate to scaremonger, but the discs contain bank details, addresses, insurance numbers, names, the lot. This is a ****-up on a colossal scale, which Labor are trying their hardest to downplay. The reaction in the Commons says it all really. (All the MPs gasped)

Not exactly! Another government may have instigated a different policy to deal with data and transferred this data electronically. There's absolutely no need for sensitive personal data such as this to be just thrown into a van for delivery! It's nothing but government incompetence!

And they want to stick even more personal data on a database and expect us to trust them with that?

The only positive to take from this is that hopefully the public will be even more enraged at the proposed ID card system.

Im also staggered by the amount of people receiving this benefit too... 25m? Surely these must include dormant recipients.

Your missing the point they didnt follow procedures there are procedures in place for sending this sort of data and on this occasion it wasnt followed.

Incompetence by the workforce not labours fault
