okay i have built my computer finally; asus p5k, e2180, 2 gig 800mhz (i actually have 2 sticks of 2gig but for some reason i can only use one stick otherwise it doesnt boot if anyone knows why this is and how to get around it i would love to know) and 8800gt, i am basically wondering what i need to do to get the best performance from it so far i have downloaded the latest nvidia drivers. what else can i do?? i am running xp 64bit.

and please if anyone can help with the ram situation i would be seriously grateful :)

okay i have just tried overclocking my cpu a bit, first time so didnt really know what i was doing lol, i load up cpu-z and it says core speed: 2400 and multiplier 10, then it randomly changes to 1441 and multiplier 6 what does that mean? it just keeps changing every 5-10 secs

A Faulty stick?

I hope you did'nt order the Geil Ultra PC2 6400 ram because it does'nt work with the P5E. I have had a nightmare with my rig and have only just got it working properly after buying some Crucial Ballistix PC2 8500. Also, when installing windows only put one stick in as it will throw up all sorts of problems. It's what Asus recommends to do as well.

no its not because i have tried both on their own and they work fine, but together they just dont boot

It could be a ram/mobo incompatiability.

The speed keeps changing because you have Speedstep enabled in the bios. It drops the multiplier when the cpu is not under load.

is that a good thing? i want that enabled, right?

no its this ram: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-086-OC&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=813
and when i put both sticks in it won't boot. That AUX thing in speedfan is worrying me, its says its 127c that cant be right surely

Oh bugger :o

This mobo is very picky about ram. It caught me out too. I thought i would get away with the Geil from my pre-upgrade rig. How wrong i was. You will need to swap it for some other stuff. All the Ballistix works in it, along with the Crucial 10th Anniversary stuff, OCZ Reaper 6400, 8500, 9200, Corsair Dominator 6400, 8500, Certain Cellshock kits also work. That's by no means a complete list but what i have found people to be successfully using on the Asus and XS forums.

Geil Ultra and Corsair XMS does not work, as i found out myself. If you can i would change the Geil in your order or if it's too late return it under the Distance Selling 7 day rule and get something else.

Most people on here disable Speedstep when overclocking but it can be a good thing if not overclocking. It's a power saving thing.

Just because the ram is Vista compatiable does'nt mean it is compatiable with your motherboard. I have had pc's not boot with two sticks in yet it would with one. That was always a compatiability problem between the memory and mobo. I would say to check the QVL list for your mobo but Asus's list is never updated.

Is black dragon fine?

Honestly don't know. People do say that it's not very good for clocking though. I would have a look at the P5E and Maximus threads in the mobo forum to see what people are running. This board is basically a Maximus minus a few extra's so what works in that should work in this. Most seem to be running PC2 8500 and over.
