Fighting a dog

You can also grab their tongue and pull as hard as you can. Apparently that prevents them from biting down on you, but also means that you have to stick your hand near their mouth to grab it first.

What you do once you've managed to get a good grip and pull the tongue out is beyond me though!

Very difficult. When younger i used to try it when we had the dog in the car and she liked putting her head out the window when driving along and panting

If you hit it you better kill it, because once they get their rage on you're stuffed. However the old wive's tale of breaking it's nose I believe should give you enough time to get up a tree or something, though it'll still try and get you.

Your grip isnt concentrated on 20 sharp teeth though.

Doesn't need to be to open something that's applying less force, regardless of how large or small a surface area it's being applied to.

i think very few people could really fight off a trained "large" breed ("large" referring to the kennel clubs definition) You just wouldnt have time to pull off all these "moves" people are going on about!

Never said you could, I was just saying to Zip that their grip isn't an immovable force and it doesn't lock in place like he believes. Most people (me included) probably wouldn't stand a chance against a larger dog without being armed or trained.

That bit wasnt aimed at yourself :) more of just a general point.

I know this is slightly off topic but i cannot express how much i hate organsied dog fighting. I have never heared of anything so disgusting before in my life.

Used to walk rescue dogs, rottys, staffs and dobermans.

A rotty went for me once as i was putting the lead on him hand first, so i actually pushed it deeper into its throat. It coughed it up then spewed lol.

Didnt try it again.

if you think about how people crumple on the floor after a punch to the arm or a kick to the leg, 99.99% of people will be on the floor in the foetal position within a split second of a dogs teeth tearing into their flesh.

you would have to have very fast thinking and very fast hands and feet to fight a dog that is intent on hurting you. something that most people in the heat of the moment (fight or flight) do not have.
So true, it's a difficult one!

Fact of it is, a big dog will hand your ass to you.

...In bite size chunks.

I've got a smallish labrador that's pretty much solid muscle. I can pretty easily have him in a bit of a wrestle, but if he got his teeth out i'd be screwed. They've got stupidly quick reaction times.

My girlfriend is a police dog handler and there's no way I'd want to fight her dog (German Shepherd)

Last Friday there was an incident with a man weilding a samurai sword (and 2 large kitchen knives), when she set the dog after him he dropped the sword and legged it (the dog still caught him though) If he didn't fancy his chances with those weapons I don't think many unarmed people would stand a chance!
