Hi.

Well this problem has happened before, and I was silly enough not to bother checking the router first and went and re installed Windows , lesson learnt there :P.

Anyway today I thought my network drivers were going funny or something because I could not access the internet Via Internet Explorer or Opera, but I could sign into MSN and get onto the internet Via AOL's Browser, but eventually even AOL's browser stopped working, web pages would not load, so I pulled the power cord out of the router, waited about 30 seconds and plugged it back in, waited for it to re connect and bam I was back on the net all working

Any idea whats going on, seems like my router may be going faulty I guess? Or is it possible the cache could have filled up?

I've heard of a problem with the log area on the router filling up which stops it working but not too sure which models this problem afflicts.

Best thing is to check what exactly is being logged and minimise the logging, so for example if you setup port forwarding then by default it logs this action, set this to never logged and it will minimise the number of log entries.

The other thing is check that you have the latest firmware as Netgear recently updated the firmware for quite a few and made some performance improvements.

How do I update the firmware?

what are your line stats? sync rate, attenuation etc..

also test your ip profile http://test.speedtester.bt.com/

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 2500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 3648 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2317 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.

Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

a sync of 3648 should result in a profile of 3000, yours is currently 2500, so you must have had a low sync event recently, check again in a few days to see if it has gone up to 3000 from 2500.

2317kb/sec, aint tha my connection atm? Because my download speed is like 291kb/sec average when I checked allthough for like half of the day the other day my connection went up to 412kb/sec download but never been able to get that speed ever since :(.

AOL said that BT has upped my line to a max potential speed of 4mb but on the BT Wholesale ADSL Checker its still showing 2.5MB max even though I'm higher than that.

your current sync rate i.e your connection speed is 3648.

2317 is the speed at which data is travelling to you.

3648 sync rate in theory should see download speeds of 2880 kbps.
so your not that far off. contention is an issue at some exchanges.

412KB/Sec would be correct for a sync speed over 4000kbps [3.5 meg profile]

I think your line is jumping around profiles, a bit unstable in other words.

everytime you drop down a profile, it can take upto 5 days for the profile to go back up if you've sync'd higher.

Once you start syncing at 4MB, the wholesale checker will probably change to mirror that.

Will my line ever be fine at 4mb? Its hell this line.

I mean 1 and a half yr ago it all started with disconnections every 10 mins sometimes 30 mins every day from 6pm to like 12pm

Now my speeds crappy not to mention AOL throttling it to 60kb/sec max download from 6 -11:30PM :(, sometimes its 230kb/sec, 290kb/sec, 350kb/sec, and other day 412kb/sec, last time it was at 412kb/sec was about 5 months ago for like 4 hours.

Its a well known NetGear problem that, does affect these routers, happens to me as well, nothing you can do, as thats what NetGear routers do, its caused by downloading/torrents, some table thing fills up, and you have to keep fannying on unplugging, switching off and on etc... until it works again.

aha, noise margin of 12dB, normally a target of 6dB is employed. It looks like the automatic DLM has kicked your margin up 2 notches, to alleviate instability.
If you can get your line stable, the margin should eventually go back to 6dB, would probably take 4 weeks to do that, as long as you don't drop down another profile.

There's only a half meg [1 x ip profile] between those two syncs.
It's getting darker earlier now, so syncs on longer lines can get a bit lower.
ADSL syncs are lower when it is dark, more noise about from many different sources. MW radio, central heating, boilers, plasma tellys, allsorts.
