Fighting a dog

Why do so many people here seem to think a dog will attack them? 99% of the dogs I've ever met (and it is quite a lot) will back down if you are a) confident and b) not entirely stupid so that you back them into a corner. For the most part ripping out a dogs throat or whatever is entirely unnecessary, you just don't put yourself in a situation where you will be attacked or need to attack a dog.

//edit apparantly that Whippet lacked the normal genes and so bulked up incredibly but even my Whippet (who was the runt of the litter when I got her) bulked up impressively due to a hell of a lot of football and running, she was more muscular than most Greyhounds until she became ill. Stacked would be the closest description I can think of and utterly fearless when chasing a ball. :)

I see your American Pitbull and raise you one English Mastiff:

It would be interesting to see the keyboard warriors try out their theories against Zorba, if he was still alive that is :D

My thoughts exactly. Too many keyboard warriors in this thread. It is the internet after all though, so can you say you're supprised?

Indeed.

All these people saying just let it bite you on the arm then bash it to death? They are definitely key board warriors.

Once a dog latches on it shakes it entire body in every direction, It will hurt a HELL of a lot, and with all that weigh moving and pulling on your arm you will be really off balance and will eventually be pulled down

To be honest I doubt most people would beat a dog when it's really after you. I've got a cocker spaniel and even though it's small it's really really quick (both reactions and running).

Might not kill you but it'll probably do damage.

I dont think anyone is doubting that a dog can do severe damage. We have been talking about repeatedly bashing it hard if it has locked its jaws on you as that is the only thing you can do. In the first instance, I think most of us would attempt to make a run for it and hope that the dog gives up. Best case scenario if we fight a dog is that we get slightly injured. Worst case, we end up dead.

Of course, if the human is armed in some way (gun, tazer, knife, samurai sword, baseball bat) and is not afraid of using it, then the dog might not be alive for long.

Obviously, some dogs are so huge they have a weight advantage over us humans. However, most dogs donot have a weight advantage and in this instance there is no reason that even if a dog has locked its jaws onto a human's arm (and in great pain), the human will be brought down. The human could inflict serious damage to the dog if it is not moving its head (due to the jaw lock). The head will be a stationary target.

In all the demonstration videos of youtube we saw, the humans did not fight back and went to ground very easily. It was for the purpose of demonstration, so it makes sense that this should be the case. But in a real situation, the human would be a lot more fired up, would fight back and would not goto ground as easily as the demonstrations all show. One video even showed a man being dragged out of the van. This would only be possible if the human assists the dog in being dragged out of the van. If the human holds onto the steering wheel, the dog could be dragged for miles and will eventually let go or die.

People need to stop thinking up tactics that would work against humans, there is a lot of them in this thread.

Unless you have something very substantial and stronger than the dog's skull, then it's not going to make one bit of difference, the only way that would be a defence is if you could cave the dog's skull in and damage the brain, which isn't going to happen.

You can't subdue a dog that's attacking by trying to inflict pain on it, it won't make any difference.

People also got to relise that dogs movbe there entire body when holding on, There shake there body and head back an fowards, They dont just hang.

They shake and pull and try to pull you down or take a chunk of flesh off you trying

Thumb in the eye? :D

Personally I've never thought about the subject though I'd prob just punch it in the nose or kick it then run like a little girl :P

I wouldn't run, unless you know you can escape within 20 yards. It's probably best to stand your ground.

In which case we are now back to square one - fighting/wrestling/thumb-in-the-eye/arm-down-the-throat etc. Instinct will tell most humans to make a run for it.

Out witting a dog is hardly difficult!
Unless your massive and built like a brick **** house then hanging about and taking on a big powerful dog going mad such as a Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro ..etc is a very foolish decision!
Even then big powerful men would need to accept that they would most likely receive some nasty deep gash's in the fight as the chances of scaring off a frenzied dog with a good hard solid pre-emptive strike are not great!

I use to be pretty good at gymnastics at school and although that was a good few years back I can assure you if a dangerous dog decided it was going attack me I would be up and on-top of the nearest: Car roof, Tree, Fence, bin, piece of street furniture, ...etc in a matter of seconds.

Erm. If you got ontop of a bin, peice of furniture or car roof the dog would simply follow you up there. So rather than grappling on the floor, you will be grappling with the dog on a car roof or a sofa. Now, unless you want to be mauled in comfort (of the sofa), I would suggest you run the hell out of there. Eventually the dog will give up.

Most of the time, if the dog is pursuing you, it is because you have entered/approached its territory. Once you leave its territory, it will leave off.
