As a rule, I NEVER buy ANYTHING from a store anymore apart from some clothes and groceries.
Reason for this is we all know, when you order something online, the prices are cheaper, you can ask people who actually know their stuff for advice (forums) in stead of idiots on the floor store.

Saturday I made the mistake of going to a large High street store and bought a new Samsung 40" HDTV. My wife woke up in the morning, after months of me pestering her about us getting a new and bigger one, she finally caved and was in the mood to go spend my money.
I happily agreed to this, since I've been wanting a new Sammy for ages now.

I knew which model line I wanted and so we went to the shop. There I made the mistake (yes it's my fault) of choosing the incorrect model of samsung.
I thought on the plackard that was in front of the TV that it had said 1080P ... but I had in fact bought a 1080i model in stead.

When we got home and set it up, we were both over the moon with the quality, however I realised my mistake when I went online (to try and find out optimal colour settings). I was also shocked to learn the model I bought, was £250 cheaper elsewhere. Now I dont mind taking a bit of a knock in the price, but that's just way too much.

I went back to the shop to explain my situation and asked for them to either prioce match me, or allow me to return the goods for a refund.

I was denied both - one because they don't price match, and the latter.... because I had opened the package!

Now I can appreciate I was in the wrong, I don't have too much of a leg to stand on... but for goodness sakes. I spent £850 on a TV I had ONE day and wanted to return.

Is there anything you can think of that might help me in this?

Many thanks!

If there's no fault with the unit, then you are, basically, stuffed. You can appeal to the goodwill of the management, but if it's only because you're after a better deal elsewhere, they'll probably not want to do that, and for good reason too.

Don't you usually get 28 days to return the product for an exchange or refund?

Not legally. Most stores offer this as a courtesy, but they are under no obligation to do so. You only have protection against faults or goods not being as described.

depends which store, many offer money back guarentee's if you simply aren't happy with the tv. even if its working perfectly fine but you simply feel its to low quality thats your opinion and can't be faulted, not all stores offer that kind of service though. but a lot of retail stores do.

but tbh, impulse buying even before the internet was what retail stores relied on, and even more heavily now. a decade ago you could walk into one shop, see it, decide you love it, buy it and 2 shops down its £100 cheaper.

whats the price like on the 1080p version of that store, they'd be more likely to accept the idea of a return if you wanted to bump up to the next tv in the range. but also asking for a price match just gives you buyers remorse, and stores would be more likely to help if you went in seeming uphappy with the screen or wanting to get a better one. when you mention price matching as you've just seen it cheaper it feels like you're holding them ransom then using the later as an excuse to return it as opposed to it being the real reason. i'm saying thats how they will see it in general, and, basically everything they sell could be taken back a week later because someone found a tv £5 cheaper, or a remoted £20 cheaper, or a remote £1 cheaper, and a tv £400 cheaper. at some point the sale does have to be final.

yup shops are ******, my microwave blew up and they wouldnt replace it coz i didnt have a receipt. so im buying the same model and returning the broken one instead and getting a refund and a working microwave. i dont see why i have to trick them to return a faulty product :(

The 1080P model is too expensive from them, where I can get it for £100 less online (£750 from another high street retail store), so I dont think I want to start losing even more.
I agree with some of what you say, but it was not quite impulse buying, since I knew exactly what I wanted, but made a blind mistake and misread the plackard

Can you not repackage it?

Yes it's still mint... literally only took it out the box

Sorry to hear that...patience and research always pays off when purchasing something.

That's what's bugging me the most. I researched for months and nagged her forever to buy it. When she woke up all keen (god knows why all of the suddden) I got too exited and to top it off.... misread and bought the wrong one :(

Bit late now but all you had to do was tell them tyou were mis sold it as a 1080p model by the sales person, I doubt they would remember or bother to argue. They should then not refuse a return/refund.

My thoughts exactly.

Still, you have to ask your wife to spend money? blimey :D

Your fault entirely for not shopping around. Why would the store either take back a used product (meaning they would loose money) or issue you the difference just because you didn't look around first? It really isn't their problem at all.

Only thing I can think of is perhaps calling head office. Sometimes they have a price match policy x days after you buy it as well. Worth a shot?

just say you are not satisfied with the picture quality and take it back?

is it really worth all the hassle for £250 though? we all do it at some time or other, think we are getting a good deal and then finding it cheaper elsewhere, so why not not take it on the chin and learn from it this time?
