'Muhammad' teddy teacher arrested

reading the story - seems like the people at fault are the 20 kids who voted for the teddy to be called muhammed, maybe they should give 40 lashes to their own children instead of picking on a western lady for a change.... o wait, where is the fun in that?

Are they upset over the name, or the real fact she taught them a democracy? i wonder.

I would  also if it was the UK.

However Sudan doesn't have Sharia law or whatever it is called does it so still

If they are not under Islamic law they can do what they like, why should a non Islamic school have to follow Islamic law?

Nuke em.

What about those people called Muhammad?

Are they going to be Arrested too :p

Mohammed (and all the variations of spellings) is the most popular forename in the world.

Who's to say that the bear was not named so because children were naming him after a favourite uncle or sibling?

People really need to chill and get a perspective on reality here.

If they'd dressed it up as a suicide bomber or something, you could understand, but this is a teddy bear in a school classroom for crying out loud.

Don't these people have better things to do than gather outside police stations??

Exactly, why would calling the teddy Muhammad be an insult to Islam. It is just a name, it doesn't mean the teddy is the profit. Why is it ok for a person to be called Mohammad but not a teddy?

The way I see it - the situation is ridiculous with her being arrested. However, the story may be sensationalist in that someone may have misinformed the authorities about what she did exactly and they reacted according to that misinformation. She will be released without hassle and the Sudanese will have to save face. Also, the antagonism between Sudan and the West will be fueling this. I sincerely hope that she is released quickly rather than being detained and turned into some sort of political football.

EDIT: In response to [TW]Fox above, have you ever been to Sudan? There are cultural norms there which must be respected, but it is also a 3rd world country so your standards of 'civilised' and 'intelligent' can take a hike when speaking in relative terms.

I find it hard to understand how people who implement laws like this can be regarded as civilised and intelligent nations.

yup they are backwards.

I don't like the idea that we stop other countries having nukes as who are we to tell them that they can't but when they do stupid stuff like this it all makes sense.

I read that the punishment for this serious crime can be 40 lashings... Thats like something I would see in Gladiator.
