The French are revolting

It is just a shame the French didn't put up the same fight in 1940 when the German's crossed the border.

The Maginot line was more like the "Imagination Line"

IIRC they did, And the Germans Bled them white.

I dont think they were as easily defeated as a lot of people seem to think from what ive read and heard

Ha, says the Englishman :)

The banlieues in France are famous for being areas of high concentrations of ethnic minorities, in which the minorities are no longer such. France's governance over much of North Africa led to a large amount of immigration, most who never really integrated into the society.
Some banlieues, like some areas in the UK, are no-go for the police. There are very high tensions between the people living in these areas and the authorities, which is, to put it in an oversimplified manner, why this has happened. They don't trust the police, and are blaming them for what happened to the two cretins who were doing silly speeds on a moto with no helmets, much like what happened in 2005 all over again. It could be a deep mistrust of authority, it could just be a way of radical expression in an environment where they don't feel at all part of mainstream society. What will be interesting is the way Sarko handles this. He has the "take no ****" attitude, and this is the first time this has happened under his rule, so the next few days/weeks will be interesting.

Indeed - I get "le monde" delivered to my house every day I shall be reading it with interest.

Oh please the French resistance was made up of a few French men trawling the countryside on pushbikes armed with only onions, garlic and a limited supply of harsh language.

Pile of crap. You need to do some better research mate - France's population was seriously raped (not in the literal sense) and massacred but by god they didn't make it easy for them to do it - however the German army was too big and too powerful (have you seen the length of the border?), and occupation was just a question of time. The question is, do you sacrifice all your men and women and have nothing left to show for it, or accept that you have been crippled and limp along until you can get your own back?

I know a lot of the "French are wimps" or whatever comments are merely facetious and just mickey taking, however a lot of people really seem to believe it. There were just as many incredibly brave men and women in France who sacrificed everything for their country and what they believed in. In POW camps and torture chambers many French graffiti markings were found - I'm not ashamed to be French and dammit I'm proud, yes we have our problems but who the hell doesn't? Hell, I'm even proud to be English too in spite of it's problems. So give me a break eh?

Keep me/us updated as to its content, oh mighty french person. :)
(edit - will, the above has nothing to do with the above few posts... i just think you're mighty, but you know that, right?)

Rotty - hope your trip goes ok and you're not inconvenienced by it too much - I know what it's like, especially when it's not your fight you think "why the hell should I have to put up with this".

Sorry - I apologise, I'm a little touchy this morning. In retrospect your comment is actually quite funny and my reply did help put the nail in the coffin somewhat didn't it? :o

You can't beat a banter of banter to get the morning going !!!

No apology required !!

It makes me sad to see the imbeciles who think the French just lay down and took it during the War, not because of the constant **** taking but becasue they actually seem to believe it. Read a book, damnit.
And for those coooooooooooooonstantly ripping it? Grow up, it becomes pathetic the fifth time.

I'd LIKE to see Sarko do something about the problems, but the segregation has been a part of French society fo so long it's not going to be easy if at all feasible. I just feel sorry for my friends, first the greves and now this.

The fact that my remarks were tongue in cheek seems to have passed you by.

You may want to read the FAQ with regards to the use of swear words too.

Thats not true. The french resistance saved the lives of thousands of allied airmen throughout the war. N00b!

Don't be petty, since when is that a swear word in any location? Gosh, you should probably inform the BBC as well, right?
And i you want my remark to me aimed at you, that's your decision, not mine, there are plenty more I could have been addressing. For the record, pretty funny comment you made there. Nice one.
