continuing on with my previous travel postings...

myself and two friendshave decided to push our year long Australia trip back from September 2008 to January 2009

only 3 months, but that then means we can have a 3-4 week long break in February 2008 - and we're considering Thailand

reasons:

very cheap
loads to do
lots to see
great history and culture
abundance of cheap lady boys

i'm joking with you, no lady boys,
but

anyone else visited? and advice/tips would be great!

thank you

Well - go to bangkok - just for the fun.

I spent 3 days there and it was a real eye opener. The sites, smells and the people. Wife hated it, but I thought it was fantastic.

Everyone is a conman and will try to get you to go somewhere or buy something. The place stinks, is very dirty, traffic is like nothing you will see anywhere else in the world and the congestion is unbelievable. You will also see all manner of bug and insects for sale on street stalls as cats and dogs sleep on the trolleys where the food is sold. Just take it all in and make sure you get down to some of the temples and Patpong Market to really see how the other world lives.

Its cheap as chips to stay there and party/eat etc, but don't think the electronics are any cheaper these days.

I’ve been. Spend a week or so in Bangkok, Khao San Road etc. Then head down south to some of the islands Ko Samet, Ko Samui and Kopanang in that order.

Yup, went there for 2 weeks, we absolutely loved it.
Brilliant(so long as you like spicy) food, cheap accomodation (chat to the taxi drivers, they seem to have connections that get you into 5* accomodation for virtually nothign) and loads to see.

Just stay clear of the really really cheap accomodation....too many cockroaches for my likeing.

Bangkok is amazing , don't miss it

take a sim free mobile and buy a sim card ( 1-2-call ) from the 7/11 shop make calls using 0744..... and calls to UK are less than 15p a min

My sister is always going out there she works a ski season in winter then spends the summer in Thailand. She loves it and always stay in the huts by the beaches! (The ones from "The Beach") I say goodluck and have fun I'm sure it will be awesome!

spent 4 weeks there in 2006.

Went to Chaing Mai in the north, and then to Krabi on the south coast. Spent 2 days in Bangkok at the end.

Thought Chaing mai was a lot nicer than Bangkok, same shopping etc but a lot more chilled out, less people hassling you and generally being obnoxious.

Things like *** Po and the Grand Palace in Bangkok are amazing certainly worth a visit.

Just read your travel guide - lots of useful things in there

i spent 5 weeks in thailand on my own without a clue as to what i was going to do and no where to stay. biggest piece of advise is to get out of bangkok asap and go north to chiang mai. its a half day train and will cost about a tenner for a 2nd class sleeper train.

then go down to ko pha ngan on the train via bangkok and onto the ferry's. theres no realy reason to stay on ko samui as its tooo much like a resort in spain now. party like an animal on haad rin for a week or so, this is where the full moon, half moon, black moon and shiva moon parties are. If u fancy diving you can then go to crabbi or ko tao which are half day ferry's away then head back to bangkok for the last few days and home.

I did pretty much this and had an awesome time. the reason i say don't head straight into bangkok is that for a person on there own with absolutely no idea where to stay is abit frightning and your very liable for conmen and muggers.

wicked, thanks all for advice - looking forward to a few days in bangkok to experience it, but then straight out!

I definately will be in thailand at the beginning of feb. Going for 3 months, possibly 4. No idea where we will be but a ping pong show and a beer sounds good! :)

When I first went to bangkok it hit me like a hammer and I couldn't wait to get out of the place, but having been back a few more times it's now one of my favourite places in the world. Tuk-Tuk is the only way to travel at night and the Skytrain is the only way to travel during the day. Pat-pong is ok to go to once, but a better night out can be found at Sircumvit Soy 4 and if you want a cheap hotel that does great food then try the Atlanta on Sircumvit Soy 2. Be warned though, if you bring a hooker back, they will though you, her and your worldly belongings onto the street.

10 years ago, Koh San Road used to be interesting, but now it's just commercialised, designed to liberate the cash of people with wheeled luggage who think they are 'travelling'.

Koh Samui is now a hotel and they even knocked down Charlie's Huts at the end of last year to build a 'resort'.

In three weeks you can cover a lot, and Thai Air to route tickets for £50 a flight so you could do Bangkok, the islands, the north and Cambodia easily in three weeks.

Don't play connect four with the street kids, you'll lose.

Play pool with the hookers, you'll still lose, but it's funny.

.

I find Bangkok tuk-tuks a pain in the arse, no matter how much you tell them they still try and take you soimewhere you don't to go

Agree Patpong is more of a one off place to go, a bit too extreme for every night

We like the Soi 4 area too, stayed at the bottom of there earlier this year ( Majestic Grande ) , the area has a great buzz to it at night

absolutely right on both counts

When l last went to Koh Samui 15 years ago there wasn't a tourist in site, from what i remember there was one decent hotel. Bangkok is awsome just don't say yes to the tuk tuk driver if he has you 'do you want to have a good time' you will end up in the ladyboy light district. However a visit to the HRC is a must, most of the waiters/waitresses are ladyboys and its a pretty safe environment to observe :D
