Vista ultimate x64 install HELP!

Hi guys

Thought id take the plunge and install Vista X64, but, i press a key to boot from cd i then get "windows is loading files", followed by the scrolling green bar, but after that i get the aero background (the blue and green picture) and the mouse cursor but thats it, the CD stops spinning and nothing else happens. I have no idea whats happening, i've tried unplugging all usb devices except KB and mouse, and i have the latest bios for my board.

System specs are in my sig, please please share your wisdom.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, im a bit of a n00b!

Any spare Harddrives on the system unplug them also, to just leave the DVD Rom drive and the one HArd Drive you are installing on. I dont know your whole setup inside your rig other than your sig.

It may help.
 
Maybe you should return your CPU to stock speeds.

I installed Vista last Saturday with 3 HDs,2 DVDs, XFI, 8800 vid card.4GBs ram and all went well.

I done what you said vicar, and it worked straight away, when it installed plugged everything back in and nearly everything works. The only problem i've got is on my 4 port usb card, it says it cant find enough free resources. The only other usb ports are those on the mobo, any ideas??

No probs Pigeon,

Actually what Silverwolf suggested also may have helped, as sometimes OC your CPU can affect Memory throught the install, depends on how safe your Overclock is. As for the USB prob, try and make sure you have the correct Vista 64 Drivers, MS own ones may work but not always the case. See if there is a download for them of the manufacturers website if not, are any devices atteched to the card in question?

at the moment i've got nothing plugged into the card, i've tried connecting mobile phone, digi cam and joystick and none were detected by windows, but when i plugged my usb key in, it worked?! im verrrry confused! I have all the x64 drivers installed from the nvidia website, all windows upadtes complete. I have also set the CPU back to stock to no avail.

Sounds like you need the right Drivers for each off you peripherials, eg Mobile, Digicam and joystick... plug each one in at a time, then get the right Driver for each if avail, with Vista depending on your hardware may or may not have Drivers.

As Vicar says try to get the right drivers for what you are goingto plug into the USBs.

Install the drivers first before plugging in the doohickeys.

Also in your BIOS you can disable all the bits you will not use. i.e. serial ports, parralel ports, network ports this will free up IRQs.

USB keys don't generally need drivers.
 
hi guys

i have done what wolf recommended, and installed all the drivers for the devices, but still no joy, in device manager i still have the yellow exclamation marks on the usb controller, the error message is "this device cant find enough free resources" (code 12) it says to disable other devices but it doesnt say what its conflicting with? i've tried unplugging everything but KB and mouse. I have looked on MS and found a supposed fix, but that has had no effect, if i plug the devices straight into the mobo, they all work fine. I really dunno what else to try, Its getting to the stage now i might go back to good ol' XP pro.

Hey Fatpigeon, if you restart your machine and enter the BIOS setup. Now try looking for a section as regards to "Plug and Play Operating System". Once you have found that particular setting set it to "Yes". Now once you have booted the machine back up, if you could then report back what has exactly changed on the "Device Manager" screen. :)

I went through my bios and the only things i could find that relate to the OS are APIC (advanced programmable interupt controller) which is enabled, when i disbaled it, windows wouldnt load at all. And MPS version control for OS which is set at 1.4, the other options are 1.2 1.4 or off, i changed this to 1.1 and nothing changed, and when set to off windows wouldnt load

thats what i thought, but if i plug them into the usb ports on the mobo, they all work fine, its only when i try them in this USB card that they dont work, but the card works fine in another machine, and worked ok in this machine when i had XP installed, thats why its sooo confusing
 
TBH

Buying a new USB backplate may be a cheap work around to solve your problem.

Have you tried moving the card to another pci slot?
 
hello

I gave up, followed vics advice and bought a new usb card today, and it has the same error, tried it in 2 slots, still the same code 12 error!

If any of you have any more ideas they will be gratefully accepted
