Well i have had this card for about 5 years i think but it seems to be on its last legs,it's only used in the media PC in the kitchen so not used much.Anyway when i turned the pc on tonight the picture seemed very dark! Is it dying [bowing out gracefully]?

could be dying m8, but 5 years from a card is pretty good, ive an old athlon rig with a gforce 4 ti4800se thats still in use, cant even remember how old the pc is nevermind the vid card:)

ye now you gotta upgrade to GTX ultra. seriously this thing will eat anything you throw at it from Neighbours to Timeteam. it's amazing

try the machine out on another monitor
also make sure the display sttings in CCC havent been changed.

replacement card with simmilar performance, X1650

I always say this but I recommend the HD 2400Pro as a replacement.

Cheap, passively cooled, does hardware decoding and is HDCP compliant. :)

X1650 and HD2400Pro are both available on AGP, so no new mobo required.

But anyway, I'm surprised you didn't recommend the OP wait for the new 8800GTS actually easy... :p

It's really not. They're about 1.5 - 2 times the performance of a 9800 Pro.

Similar performance is a 6600GT.

really depeds which one you get, if you end up with the neutered (but cheap) one with 400(800) mhz ram then they are about equal. if you get the nice(more expensive) one, then yes. its faster. but i dont see why shell out £££ on a kitchen pc! the 2400pro is probably a better choice anyway ;)

Poor old 9700Pro, what an awesome card. Mine is still going strong, got covered in water when my Vapochill 'leaked' didnt work for 2months while it dried out but still works now :)

Soon to be retired....well sold to a mate!
