xbox live not available..?

I just bought my 360 today and am going through the process of setting everything up, but it refuses to let me create a gamertag - I enter my Windows Live details (@hotmail.com address and pwd) then it tells me xbox live is not available?

I'm assuming it's just that, not available or am I doing something really silly? Connection tests are all okay, on ethernet so there's no dropouts etc..

It does look like Live is having some problems judging by the dodgy gamercard sigs.

phewwwwwwwwwww, I've been noticing a few issues as well, I thought my 360 was on it's way out, I was stroking it saying "please please don't die before Christmas".

Every time I watch a Saints match on the telly we loose, I think I am just a bit of a jinx! I just wanted to download some demos, guess it's a trip to Asda tomorrow to buy a mag with a disc full of demos if it isn't fixed by then..
