What would be the best SD card choice for my new Nikon D40 6MP.

I've seen the two following cards;

Maxell Class 4 4GB SD HC Memory Card for £15
Maxell X-Series 2GB SD Memory Card for £8

I would go for the larger card so you can fit more pictures on it. I don't believe there will be any performance impact for the camera, so no harm with the larger card.

I'd be tempted to get Sandisk over Maxell though, just cos Sandisk are well known and very trusted. Well, as long as you buy from a reputable store.

I have a 4GB and a 2GB as a spare, both are sandisk extreme III's. I've not had to resort to the spare yet...

Chances are if a card corrupts it will be all the days images whether it's 2 or 4 gig.

True, but if the first card is corrupted, you can use the second card and attempt to recover the pictures from the first card later.

4gig would only be a loss if you never download your images onto yourv PC. I dump mine pretty much after each time I go out. only time I load it up is on holiday etc. Plus you can take as many shots as you want and never fear running out of space, even in raw. And you dontr have to mess about changing cards.

On holiday i have a device called a Nexto. It's a laptop harddrive housing and drive with a CF slot, a battery and enough of an OS to copy all the data of off the CF card to the hard drive. Every night i dump the whole CF to the disk and have a clean start the next day. That way I shoot at the highest quality for the whole time.

Ok im not 100 % on what cards they are but at where I work they have 1gb or 2 gb SD cards for £5 each. There is nothing on thier website about this but I saw a stand at the entrance with them on as I was leaving on Monday.

Ill have a look later to see if they are compatible with the D40, as thats what Im getting tomorrow for my birthday.:)

Buy the fastest.
I was using 4gb SDHC cards in my D80 and the write time from buffer to card was sooooo slow.
Now using 2gb Extreme III cards. Big difference in write speed from buffer from card. Can now use the D80 in continuous mode with out having to wait an age for the buffer to empty. This buffer problem would stop the camera for around 20 seconds!!

2Gb Extreme III cards can be bought cheap. Need to buy some more now.

Get 2 of the 2GB, i carry 3 2GB and a 1GB if im taking pictures, you get the 4GB space, but the security of losing a max of 2GB photos.

similair question so ill put it here

upped fomr d50 to d70 today, in my d50 i had a 2 gig scandisk Extreme III

and I have to say I was happy with the speed.

The CF card you already have should be fast enough. I don't think the D70 can get data to the card fast enough to take advantage of any higher write speeds offered by the Extreme IV's or equivalent.
