What do you want for Christmas?

- 12v air compressor (tyre pump)
- A book on planning and house construction techniques
- Girls aloud, call the shots

Cant think of a lot else, and tbh i might buy all that stuff tomorrow as i need it. Cant really see the point of asking for things for christmas, 22 now im kind of beyond the age where i need things bought for me, and will just be treating it as a family event.

- A book on planning and house construction techniques
.

You building a house?

Unfortunately. The only good book, only covers conventional building techniques. And tbh cavity walls made of brick. is frankly expensive and takes ages to build as well as being a poor insulator. Compared to modern techniques like Beco.

Not physically :D But yeah i will be paying a construction team. I am just doing background reading as i will be doing a lot of the work with tradesmen friends. The book which i think is pretty good is "Housebuilding - A do it yourself guide", by RJ DeCristoforo. Its an american written book based around timber frame construction, adapted for the UK market :) The bits which are of interest are the groundwork and foundation parts.

Awesome. have you researched beco and other foam/concrete/render methods. The joys of it is you can have the main shell standing within a few wekeks. Has a much better insulation value and cheaper.

I'll be interested to see it in progress. I would love to build my own house. Get the power sockets in the right place, recess lcd's into the wall, layout how you want. electrical system with everything x10 networked and of course lan access in every room.

Yeah ive been researching for ages, and have taken the advice of my uncle who is an architect and has overseen practically half of taunton, so quite well connected in terms of that. Builders and contractors are all sourced and materials priced. Just waiting for the right plot, then i can adapt designs to suit the appropriate planning and everything can go ahead :)

If you have the drive to do it and want it enough, then there is nothing stopping you, self build finance is readily available from loads of sources, its not as complicated as people would assume - i really dont know why more people dont go this route. I am planning to hopefully complete my first project for around £200k, and have secured contingency funding to a quarter of a mill incase, but i hope to avoid needing it as forecasts put me well clear of even 200.
