Biceps

You will not get big biceps from squatting and benching. These exercises are good for promoting the production of growth hormone which will help all of your body, but them exercises are not what you would call bicep builders.

Back exercises can be attributed to big biceps (bent over rows, chin ups, pull ups, deadlifts etc).

I appreciate what you are saying and advising him to do the big 3 is absolutely spot on, but what you said isn't entirely correct.

I agree I failed to mention other big compound movements that hit the biceps hard, such as the ones you highlighted about. I did fail to elaborate the fact that some who ask 'How to get big biceps' is probably not yet at a position to be doing isolation exercises. I think too many notice trainers (no offence if the OP is not a novice) do too many isolation exercises, when they should be focusing on compound movements and probably don't need to train the bicep directly, the synergy of compound movements should take care of it.

Apart from maybe bench where the biceps act as stabilisers, I fail to see how any of the big three have any effect on them

deadlifts hit my tris more than bis, just hold a heavy dumbell by your side and see whether its bi's or tri's that are being worked ;]

Release of growth hormones, squatting makes our body go w-t-f just happened?! Lots of goodies start getting pumped round then.
afaik, you still need to actually cause fibre damage for muscles to get stronger/bigger, gh's just cause hyperplasia which stimulates muscle cell growth?

I don't know the answer to the question but I presume someone doing heavy compound lifts as well as working the arms adaquetely would see better results than someone just doing curls.

How many guys do you see with 17"+ arms that don't have big chests and back to match? (Being fat and having big, fat arms doesnt count :P)

Your body wants to grow relatively in proportion generally so if you maintain a balance throughout with a variety of lifts rather than concentrating solely on one bodypart (and particularly a comparatively small one like the biceps) then you will see better results on average.

I should say that what I don't know about bodybuilding and physiology in general could fill libraries but that is my understanding. :)

SPW is right, your body wants balance and the thing with size is you need to balance it all out. To get big you need to balance all the exercises with their opposites - the whole pull/push relationship. Compound exercises are essential for all around growth. Sure you can do hundreds of curls every day, but it won't benefit and develop as fast as putting your entire body through the process.

yeah, point was that you still need to train the muscles. :)
