Was thinking about this when browsing Wiki - who has been the greatest military unit of all time, in terms of influence, victories, world impact etc. When I say unit it could be an entire empire army right down to an individual unit or squad. Including quasi political units in this as well (i.e. Mossad).
This might not even be possible to evaluate, or be very much personal opinion but thought it was an interesting topic.
For my own part I'd have to say top of the list is The Roman Empire - I don't think an army has ever seen as much success either before or since, in view that they had to actually militarily conquer territories in a time when a lot of places were very harsh and some impressive enemies conquered - Gauls, Huns, Greeks, Egyptians etc.
Others I would include would be...
Mongols at the time of Genghis Khan (shows the importance of cavalry and conquered most of the Far and Middle East)
Vikings in the late Dark Ages (more raiders than anything but universally feared)
Germany at the height of the Blitzkreig (for pure power, speed and introducing a new type of warfare)
Greece at the time of Alexander
British Empire 1700-1900 (for sheer amount of world domination compared to country size)
NB this refers to organisations or armies of men - NOT military hardware/weapons!
