My girlfriend has just told me their cooker was leaking lots of gas, it's been disconnected now and the landlord is saying he'll be around to glue the leak.

Now my understanding was that to make a repair on something like this you need to be trained/qualified.

I've had a google but couldn't find anything official that states this. I don't think it's a good idea to have a bodge job on something like this!

So does anyone know where there is an official rule/law that she can show her landlord and demand he pay for a proper repair?

(For any eagle eyes, my location is in Canada but my GF is in the UK).

Crikey, glue in a gas leak, bloke really sounds like he knows what hes doing.

I would get someone in who does know what theyre doing and get your GF to send him the bill.

Tell her to shut the gas off, call transco now and don't let the landlord anywhere near the place without him showing you a current corgi card.

WooHoo! Quick replies.

Yes i'm making sure that she won't accept his repair and will only get the repair carried out by someone qualified (corgi registered! I'll have to remember that bit thanks!).

I was hoping there was a website/document hidden away somewhere that had this in writing, so when she demands he pays there is documentation stating that he has to do a proper repair.

She shut the gas mains off as soon as she smelt the gas and called an emergency repair guy. He found the problem with the cooker and disconnected it, he checked the pipes and said they were fine.

But now they have no working cooker and need it repaired/replaced. This is where the problem came in because the landlord is sure he can glue the leaks himself. There's no way they're going to let him do that though!!!!!!

Looking at your location, Edmonton, Alberta... Canada ?

Do they have the "Corgi" system over there ?

me up at the top of the page said:

You noticed my location but not my note in the post!!! :D:D

I have no idea what system they have over here, my flat is fully electric so no gas worries :)

Im not sure about canada, but anyone in the UK who does anything with gas appliances must be corgi registered, dunno if that applies internationally, but i would assume canada has a simmilar scheme whereby anyone who fits/maintains gas powered appliances must hold the relevent certificates.

I would be very surprised if canadian law permits unskilled persons to maintain gas appliances.

enough said really.

Otherwise the landlord will be in a lot of trouble.
The law might of changed but it use to be. You could do the pipe work yourself. Then get a corgi registered person to do the safety checks on it, before it is then connected.

Is this still the case. Or is it 10 years out of date now.

When you have a gas leak call - [SIZE=-1]0800 111 999 depending on the severity they will be out fairly quick and will advise what to do.

lol, doh!

Consumer action group/landlords/tennants

The system must be inspected and a safety certificate issued every 12 months also by a corgi registered person.

It's illegal for him to make his own repairs under the Gas Safety (Installations & Use) Regulations 1998. Breach of regulation 49 at the very least.

Does your GF have a managing agent. If so she needs to get a rocket up them as they will be in breach of their duty of care under the same regulations if they let the landlord go ahead.

I would think that every civilised country in the world has strict gas laws.
For those of you can remember my cousin got blown up by a faulty gas cooker connection last year in Majorca.
He suffered 66% 3rd degree burns and I thought he was going to come home dead.
He's still going through the Spanish courts claiming for the accident.

Alcudia blast: rubber tube on cooker had expired in 1994

ACCORDING to initial investigations into the butane gas explosion which injured three people and destroyed a chalet in the port of Alcudia on Monday, the blast was caused by a faulty gas cooker, the rubber tube of which had expired.. Carl Wall, 49, was flown to the special burns unit at the Vall d'Hebron hospital in Barcelona because of the serious nature of his injuries, which included burns to 66 per cent of his body. Yesterday, his condition was reported to be extremely serious but stable.
A hospital spokesman said that he was unconscious and on assisted breathing.
According to the Guardia Civil, Wall rented a room from Linda Feldman and John McGuire, who were released from Son Dureta hospital on Monday.
There was a gas cooker in his room so that he could prepare meals.
The report said that the cooker had not been officially serviced since 1994, and the rubber tube which connected the cooker to the butane gas bottle had expired. It also appears that some repairs had been made to the cooker. It is believed that Wall did not realise that there had been a leak and there was accumulated gas in the room and when he switched on the light, shortly before 9am, there was an explosion, which left him buried in the rubble and badly injured. Only a few walls of the chalet in Calle Perdiu were left standing.
The gas company recommends that installations should be checked every four years.
