Which of these tyres to buy?

Hi guys,

I wasn't going to bother getting new tyres as I plan to change the wheels next year and the current tyres have loads of tread left, but seeing the state of the roads at the moment and the consequent traction issues, I think something needs to be done about it.

I've done a bit of research recently regarding 'decent' tyres and am fully aware how highly praised the Eagle F1's are.

Just before I order though, I'm interested to see which tyres people would recommend out of the following...

Eagle F1 GSD3
Vredestein Sportrac 3
Avon ZV3/ZZ3
Toyo Proxes T1-R
Falken 512 (is it the 512 or the 452 which are the 'good' ones?)

and then of course...

Kumho Ecsta ;)

will be buying in 205/45/16" and am looking to spend around £65 each. Camskill are by far the cheapest.

Thanks :)

IMO The GSD3 Goodyear is a fanastic tyre and you won't go wrong with it

Failing that the FK452 would be my second choice

But I guess it depends on the car and driving style so everyone will have their own opinion.

I bought mines from etyres & they are doing the goodyears @ £91 fitted a corner in 215/45/17

I found the T1-R very good for the money. Was quite a bit cheaper than the Eagle F1 for my Focus, so I went for it over the F1.

IMO the Toyo's also have soft sidewalls like the Goodyears F1's

I think in the wet the GSD3s are great all round tyre which don't need a great amount of heat in them to generate grip from cold

For me the Toyos wear too quickly - great in the dry but are poor in the wet

For the Summer: Bridgestone RE050A
For the Winter: Goodyear GSD3s

Or GSD3s all year round but you do sacrifice some dry weather handling

I've heard fantastic things about the Vredestein. I think they are better value for money than the Eagle F1's. The Eagles are a tiny bit better, but are quite a bit more expensive (in my car's size its £71 for the Vredestein and £80 for the Eagles.)

Surely Hydragrip would be better than GSD3 for winter-only driving?

my choice would be (and always is) the GSD3's, fantastic tyre - though a little less hard wearing than i'd like.

Some mixed reviews which is always good.

Think I'm going to put this one down to how much I like the tread pattern of each :p

Might try the Vredestein... a bit cheaper than the Eagle's and supposed to be just as good. Still open to suggestions though :)

I have some Eagle F1's on my car and they have worn out in about 10k miles. Too soft IMO.

Oh and the reason why I thought they were loosing grip in the wet was because I thought they had tread left because I hadn't done many miles but they are virtually gone!

you know where my opinion lies ;) but i know that at least one rover owner didnt get on with the parada spec 2s on his 220 (Karl), so i dunno if it's a car specific thing.

10k miles isnt bad for a high power fwd car with premium tyres tbh :s

Eagle F1 GSD3 - Had these on the Puma, were very good.
Vredestein Sportrac 3 - No idea
Avon ZV3/ZZ3 - Had these on MGF, disgustingly bad in the wet, felt like they were made of plastic. Dangerous IMO
Toyo Proxes T1-R - Had them on MR2, good grip in all weathers
Falken 512 (is it the 512 or the 452 which are the 'good' ones?) - Had the 512s on the CTR, were excellent, far better than the RE040s that were standard. Got 452s on the rear of the ZR, seem ok but can't really comment cos they're only on the rear.

id go for the vredestein as ive heard a lot of good things. we all know eagles rock, but i like to try something different

im going to the sportracs next
