Tyre Dilemma

Had MOT this morning, pass but a couple of advisories

firstly the headlight I mentioned a couple of weeks ago is pointing too low due to the self levelling motor not working, managed to track a used one down for £175 so loads better than the £775 BMW wanted, will get that swapped soon

anyway the other were that the rear tyres are down to 3mm

when I replaced the wheels a few months ago they came with a set of Toyo T1-R tyres

the car previously had Michelin PS2s on which IMO were much better and wore no where near as quick as the Toyos

The fronts still have 5-6mm on so nowhere near to being due for replacement

so would I be better getting 2 more Toyos to keep all the tyres matched or putting some PS2s on the back as they are better both in terms of handling and wear but this will leave me with mismatched tyres

for the record PS2s are about £500 a pair and Toyos about £400

I've got Ps2s and think they are brilliant. Have you thought about the new Eagle F1s as test in Evo a while back

Get the Michelins, law requires you to have matching tyres just for the axle they're on afaik.

No it doesn't, but as stated you must have the same type (radial/crossply) and size across the axle. I think the Volvo has 4 different makes :)

From personal experience i would go for the PS2's but it depends on how much longer you plan on keeping it. If changing inside a year I would go with the Toyos as they are cheaper and in no way ditchfinders.

A few people have advised against mixing front and rears on the Z, so I'd be interested to see how you get on mixing tyres on yours. My rears will need replacing soon and I was going to replace them with the contis and then replace all 4 next time round with PS2s.

are you sure its the levelling motor and not the sensor adjusting it?
we had that problem with our car, new sensor was £60

Rotty, I would stick with PS2. I don't like to mix types front->rear, as different tyres have different characteristics (eg, slip angles), and mixing them can upset the handling. Also, the M3 handbook does specifically state not to mix types across front->rear axles.
