A friend of mine has a Dell Dimension 8300 and the Radeon 9800XT it came with has just died. He needs a replacement AGP card, preferably with around the same or better performance.

The PSU in the Dell is only 250W so that kind of limits things a bit. I'm surprised it could actually run the 9800XT, since the system has two optical drives, 3 hard drives, a TV card and a wireless card as well.

Anyone have any recommendations for a decent AGP card that won't overload the computer?

Thanks

Ati x800xl (should be a bit faster and it does not require a power connector to psu)

I had one and it was pretty good

Thanks for the replies. 7600GT looks like a good bet, and OcUK have plenty of them in stock. I was looking at the X1950 as well, but I think that might be pushing it a bit.

I just put his current system into the eXtreme Power Supply Calculator and it was coming up as using 295W! Computer must have on hell of a 250W PSU... The 7600GT comes in at 23W less so I think I'm settled on that.

Hmm, that confuses things a bit. I might go for AMD HD2400 Pro - I know it's a woeful card, but according to the PSU calculator it uses barely any power.

Surely anything that uses less juice than the 9800XT should work though - and the 7600GT uses a lot less from what I can tell. Getting a new PSU would solve the problem of course but Dell have their stupid propriety case and PSU designs...

I had a Dell 250w PSU in my old rig for ages, it weighed a ton, the spec was XP3200, 9800XT, 2 Hdd, 2 optical drives etc...

Go with the 7600, it should be fine.

If its AGP then between x800 and 7600 I think 7600 but dunno what speed difference between a x800xl and x800xt as I know an x800xt is faster than a 7600GT

What about the older 6800 series? The 6800le might be ok?

A 1950 would DEFINATELY not be a good idea, as the power requirements are far too high (Think 400W at least, and your getting there).

Dell psus are usually pretty solid - and it sounds like your mate's can do almost 300w at a push. The 9800xt had a minimum 300w psu recommendation, as does the 7600gt.
