Hi guys,

recently been looking into a playstation 3 to play at home and uni. Only problem is my monitor at uni only has a VGA connector, and it seems that this is incompatible with the playstation 3? If anyone could help me out and tell me what i need to do to get the playstation 3 to play through a VGA port i would appreciate it (and not too costly)!

thanks,

Meloco

just to add... if i use these 2 things will it work?

You could try PS3>>HDMI/DVI>>DVI/VGA

Can't guarantee that it would work. Whatever you do don't buy one of those component/HDMI to VGA boxes. They are generally rubbishy!

I am sure there is some HDCP restriction, but I am also sure someone has posted here saying it is not an issue and they use a similar setup. As VGA is not technically supported on PS3, you will still only be able to pick standard resolutions like 480p, 576i, 720p, 1080i, 1080p etc, so even if the cable combo works you may find the picture is still a bit rubbishy when your monitor has to do some scaling of the above resolutions.

Edit: Too slow, you have suggested the same 2 items I have. (They are competitors so you will have to remove the links!!) Don;t buy from them, they are a ripoff, the 2 items you refer to can each be bought online for about £5-£7 each.

Thank-you for the quick reply.. i was just thinking about sound? Could be an issue as my hi-fi doesn't support digital audio (still uses the cables).. beginning to think i will just stick with my xbox360, much simpler :/.

Edit: My monitor is a samsung 920N series

this is the only thing stopping me from getting a PS3 :(

ive even considered buying another 360 instead but not too sure tbh

just want to use it with my acer19" tft :(

A quick google shows you can still buy the PS2 Linux kit which gives you the VGA cable. (I believe V1N on these forums uses the cable on a non HDCP monitor and has not had any issues with it).

You get:

It costs £21.49, which seems steep, but I guess some of the price is for the Linux software.

According to the 'full kit' pictures, you get a hard drive, broadband adapter and keyboard for that money too....?!

/edit - I could have course be full of crap.

You used to, but they are now discontinued. In fact from what I read you can only get these kits in the EU now (I guess no-one in USA/Asia cares about Linux on PS2) and they only contain the VGA cable and Linux discs.

I have sent an e-mail to this company to clarify if you can buy just VGA adaptor on its own and what the exact pricing is for cable and discs. Maybe it will help out a few ps3 users.

That is for PS2 not PS3, does it still do 720p/1080p?

The lack of VGA/DVI output on PS3 is the main reason I haven't bought one :(

Although I believe VGA and Component are similar. It may be able to get a simple Component->VGA adapter?

The same AV accessories work on the PS3 as they have same multi AV out ports. The resolutions are defined by the console, not the cable.

V1N on the forums has tested this with the cable I referenced above, connected to a non HDCP monitor.

I've been thinking of getting a 24" 1920 by 1200 monitor to use with a PS3. Now either going DVI with HDMI to DVI cable or getting a HDMI input monitor.

The problem I haven't solved yet is sound. Ok the monitor will have speakers but generally they're crap, how do you get a decent sound output.

I have digital sound input on my motherboard and a 5.1 soundcard so I'm assuming I could drive speakers that way but it's all a little inelegant having my PC on just to drive speakers for my PS3 sound.

Any suggestions?

I am fairly sure that when you use HDMI as the video output you only have 2 options for sound.

1) through HDMI (no good to you as your monitor won;t have speakers)
2) through the optical (TOSLINK) port to another device/speakers.

third option (which you will have to try) is plug the AV (composite) cable on and see if the phonos on there produce any sound.

Alternatively the above cable sounds like it does it all!! (VGA input and phono sockets for audio). We need V1N to post really to confirm, although I think he only used it briefly a few months back, so may not remember.

same situation here got a ps3 cheap and it doesnt do vga or dvi and i have the fantastic 24" from ocuk that doesnt have hdcp :o

There is the expensive option of HDFury hdmi->vga adaptor. this would allow the ps3 output to work on just about any monitor.

I get no output at all if i connect ps3 hdmi->dvi on my Beliniea 102035w.
hdmi -> dvi and hdmi->hdmi do work fine on my 24" benq fp240w though with it being a hdcp compliant screen.
