Love the advert for the 323i.

Well, nothing other than..

Not that this is a problem but it just shows you cant believe any of the BS a trader will spin you.

I think your reading that wrong.

In a nutshell, taking the ad at face value, whatever has wanted doing has been done.

Any sane prospective buyer will no doubt check this with BMW to verify.....

A car that has 'wanted for nothing' logically has never required repair work, or wanted bits doing to it. Yet this one clearly did :p

Although you could argue a car that 'wants' for something requires something doing that has otherwise been ignored. Hmmm, you are right!

the idea of buying a car off ebay worries me a little, that one looks a little chaved up, what engine is in 323i, has it got much more grunt then the 318?

Would prefer under 80k and manual

323i is a 6cyl, 2.5l, 170bhp engine.

318i (pre-facelift) is 4cyl, 1.9, 116bhp engine.

The mid-range acceleration between those two cars would be like night and day.

The 318i had a new engine in 2002 which increased capacity to 2.0l and power to 140bhp but I doubt very much that you'll be able to get one for £5k.

Details of the different engines and revisions (BMW make a lot of engine revisions and ongoing improvements) can be found here:-

Pleased to see some actually decent posts from MarkDavis, kudos there :D

Although 320i's are a pain to find at the cheaper end of the market as they only appeared in late 2000 after the M52 engines were replaced with M54's so are not quite old enough to be readily available cheap yet.

well its now down to 2 cars, the alfa is gone, reliability fears and servicing costs outweigh the tasty front end.

BMW 3 series or Focus ST170, iv emailed a few people selling them for around £5250 - £5500 to see if they will budge on price, im hoping a few of them will then I can go and see a few of em.

Another vote for the BMW. I have a 323i and it is fantastic to drive and extremely comfortable, even with 90k on the clock. Got it for £4800 with tax & 12 months warranty (which I needed once on a leccy problem). The SE doesn't have a great spec, but I spent almost £2k less on the car than I intended, so retro fitted the 16:9 sat nav myself for about £900.

I own one - that's why its better than a 328i ;)

Having driven an e39 528i & 523i, assuming they are the same engines in the respective e46 model, (323i / 328i) how do you come to that conclusion?

The 528i has a lot more get up & go than the 523i, I'd assume the same would be true comparing a 323i with a 328i.

I have not driven an e46 323i or 328i but I can't see how a larger capacity version of what I believe to be ,essentially, a near identical engine, could possibly be the worse to drive of the two...

The 328i is definitely not worse to drive and obviously has more power. It's a running debate started by that Foxy poster who folllows me around these forums constantly mentioning 323i/328i in any random thread possible (even if its not about BMW). Basically he questions why anyone would buy a 323i but I'm happy with - it was cheaper to buy than the 328i, slightly less to insure, and at the time more available.

So basically, you were lying / embellishing the truth / in denial (as usual) when you said it only gets brought up only BMW threads. What a surprise.

Says a lot about you

ooo a whole once. Becuase you've never, ever gone off at a tangent in a single thread. And another thread ruined by bickering. Can't we have a truce for the sake of the forum? :p

You started it. Again. R124 asked a perfectly reasonable question, I gave a perfectly reasonable explanation and yet again, you chip in with some prattle that, yet again, turns out to be untrue. Try putting a sock in it next time.
