X Box 360 compared to PC Graphics

Wouldn`t it be great if we could run our pc games like the console can? imagine how much qwicker games would run if your hole computer resources where completly used for running your favorite game, and be able to boot from the game disc.

Atleast we're not stuck with streaming data off the disc, thats sloooooow.

No, it wouldn't. Microsoft has already tried the ability to play a game without installing it first with Halo 2 and watched it fail! It's called Tray and Play and is pretty much pointless. Also don't forget even consoles have an OS. It is heavily optimised for the specific architecture of the console, so is usually more efficient than the PC alternative, but they are nowhere near as dynamic or powerful.

People have created linux boot CDs before slimmed down for just the essentials for a specific game with the kernel compiled for the specific hardware and there really isn't enough performance difference to make it worthwhile on a modern PC... around 2% performance increase max and more like 0.5% on average.

Last time I played around with that kinda performance profiling was with quake 3 back in the geforce 3 days... despite the claims of better performance in linux I found that windows 98, debian and redhat all gave exactly the same performance, with windows XP very slightly slower - by about 3fps against a timedemo of 190fps and a linux install with the kernel and drivers targetted to the specific hardware only gained me a couple of fps.

On a full HD TV or high res monitor a "high spec" PC will obviousely win. On an average Plasma or LCD TV (1024x768 / 1360x768) there is very little difference. I play my 360 and PS3 on the TV and PC on a monitor at 1680x1050.

In all honesty I prefer consoles for sports and fighting games, with PC's being better for FPS and strategy. Although saying that, the PS3 is not far away from the PC because you can connect a mouse and keyboard to play some FPS games.

The problem with PC's is that in 12-24months time current hardware will struggle to play games. The 360 and PS3 will be fine for another 5 years because game developers will get better at there job (developing), rather than relying on hardware boosts.

Has nobody heard, PC gaming is supposed to be dieing out:D.

edited to add COD4 is way better on my PS3 than it is on the PC. That's because I play it on my plasma, with full surround sound. Graphics may not be quite as good as the PC (8800GT / 3.3GHz C2D), but the all round experience wins easily. Each to his own I guess.

are you being serious?? i too play it on a full hd tv and the jaggy walls on the ps3 are apparent! i play it on a gtx with max aa and af and it makes the ps3 look pitiful. the gtx has already surpassed the ps3 graphics and the next gen 9800's will leave it looking even worse!

Nah. Consoles are nothing to X1900 cards and above. Not a patch but nice try. October 2006. Yeah, then the consoles were a force to reckon with but as soon as the 8800GTX came out and every card between then and now just makes the consoles look feable for the enthusiasts that want the BEST IQ. This is from playing on a 52" LCD Samsung TV down to my P225f Viewsonic with 2048x1536. Consoles are ok'ish but they don't hold anything to a PC. Sorry but I've had and used just about every console out and even my 2900Pro kicked the xbox and PS3 GPU's upside down.

Most of our PC's kick the Xbox 360 and PS3 now, my PC aint that powerfull anymore but it certainly proberbly destroys an Xbox 360 whilst at the same time it can do more, it runs quieter, it loads quicker and looks better :D, all my games can run at 1680x1050 with 4xAA, some with 16xAA with the exception of crysis which cant run with any AA :p.

What would you rather have? :

yeah the ps3's gpu is similar to a 7800GTX, and the 360's is sort of inbetween an x1800xt to x1900xt. So the 360's is better :p

But back to the original post, the PC version looks better than the 360/PS3 version :)

Id rather have the 360, assuming I can keep my 8800GTS :D
The graphics on the 360 do look pretty good but thats because there running at 600p
Apparently the graphics are 1024x600 resolution with 2x AA(according to beyond3d), I think an average pc would run Crysis at those settings.

Halo 3 didnt have any AA tho

Both :)

There's no doubting a PC looks better but there's been quite a drought of worthwhile PC games in recent months compared to a flood of decent games on 360/PS3.

I'd much rather have tons of games to play than the odd few which look great. I honestly can't think of anything else I'd like to play on my PC right now - a shame as my 8800 GTX has done absolutely sod all for weeks.

Of course this is my opinion and no amount of whinging or flaming will change that. In short the point I'm trying to make is that if all you're bothered about at the moment is CoD4 then the PC wins without a doubt. Personally while I think CoD4 is a great game, I like playing other new stuff too - something the PC doesn't offer me right now.

I agree, a good game is a good game whatever its on :)

Yea you got me I'd rather have both too, actually, I'd rather have them all :p, PS3, Xbox360 and a PC :D.

Also depends on what games you prefer, I know I couldn't play a fps on a console (GoW isn't really a fps). Also I liked Supreme commander and Command and Conquer, plus on my PC I can use whatever controller I want, so I can use old steering wheels and joysticks. If I could have only 1 I'd have a decent PC and I do.

Sign me up for the PC please :D. I can repair Xbox360's with the 3 rings of death so I could even pick myself up a thought faulty console and get myself a very cheap console. The reason why my m8 has 4 of them and I've not bothered should show my interest in consoles. The idea of just being able to play without any messing about with graphics might grip some people but not me. I like to mess about very quickly as it isn't exactly taxing on the ol' noggin. I also hate no AA in some titles. It doesn't bother me all the time but a lot of the games I've played on the Xbox, I've played on the PC also and there is no comparison.

You've got the right idea ;).

PS2 pads for Pro Evo, Force Feedback wheel (gathering dust though as Im lazy :o) for driving games and If I ever get boring enough to stomach flying from Edinburgh Airport to somewhere virtually in the world then I'll buy a joystick too.

Consoles do own 3rd person though (IMO).

That's funny because I play my PC games on a 32" LCD with full surround sound. ;)

As someone said though... For me it comes down to genre. I don't like platformers and things like that on the PC, but I use my PC for pretty much everything else (FPS, strategy etc.)
