The drive issue isn't a 40GB issue, it has been happening with launch 60GB's too.
See this thread: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=113728
On other news my 40GB did the exact same thing, it froze on Uncharted and after rebooting it won't read discs, the drive doesn't even spin up.
So it sounds like what was said on the PS3 forum, the drive controller must have shorted out.
Gonna get it replaced from a certain shop in a bit.
Don't know if you read this before you return yours, But "deactivate" the ps3 you return. Each PS3 master account can be accessed on 5 PS3s, your broken one is already counted as one, unless you go into account management and deactivate it before you take it back to the shops. It's unlikley you will need all 5 of you licenses but it can be useful if you have more PS3s break, o you wish to share you paid games with 4 other people etc.

Thankfully it can replaced quickly. Also, your thread got locked!Be good if Zefan actually read the thread!!! Haha!
Won't he need the license for Warhawk as thats 1 per console?

No,
If he logs on with the same account as his previous console, Warhawk should work fine. The only difference with Warhawk as opposed to everything else is that you need to be logged in as the "buyer" account to play it. Assuming no-one at the shop he returned it plays with his account, he should be OK
