Asus P5K Premium -OR- Abit IP35 Pro

There both top mobos, each have their own minor strengths and weaknesses, would be like comparing a Big Mac to a Double-Whooper :D

I went with the ASUS board although I was very tempted by the ABIT.
Sorry to go off topic, but I thought you had the Asus P5K-E?? I thought you always went with the cheapest value for money lol. (thats a good thing by the way, wasn't taking the ****.) :)

I switched from a 150GB Raptor to Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB SATA-II 16MB(WD5000AAKS).

It was a bad decision because the 150GB is faster at booting up windows & is faster at loading up zones/levels in games it feels more snappier.

If I was you, I would buy 1 - 150GB Raptor & use this for games/windows & purchase a 250GB Sata II hard drive for storage/backup of mp3's/video etc etc. This is what I intend to do i.e. buy another 150GB Raptor, they are also a lot quieter than the 74GB/36GB versions & slightly faster - I would never ever buy a 74/36GB Raptor ever again horrible things.

If your clocking on AIR then it wont matter if you choose the Asus or the Abit to be honest, but for everyday stable 24 hour use 3.6ghz max is more than enough. If you was looking to go crazy on water then most probally I would go for the Asus. (I woudnt personally I dont like Asus)

If you ever need to RMA a motherboard - with Asus expect at least 3 weeks to 6 weeks on return of the motherboard which will be repaired.

With Abit you can expect a new motherboard within 4 working days, I've actually done an RMA with Abit - their based in the UK, Asus ship the motherboard abroad for repair.

Asus solder their bios chip onto the motherboard so if your bios update screws up you have to replace the motherboard. Abit use normal replaceable bios chips which can be sorted within a few days.

Something worth noting.

The later revision is 2.00g which i would suspect is all you can buy now. They dissapeared for a while and when they came back in stock they were the 2.00g.

You will need to have a good read through but:-

Certain Sata II drives, not sure about Raptors but they seem to be incompatable - Seagate 7200.10's & 11's seem to work fine.

Interesting read Nelly, and this issue with the sata (2) problem goes back to last year August 2007 and Asus is aware of this sata associated problem. Hardware problem not fixable by Bios update? (i am not inciting, just mentioning the information is interesting)

It seems some people have had issue while using 'RAID' and 'ACHI'. Does it say there is a problem with regular SATA disks at this time?

This is a bit worrying as I'm about to get a P5k and i want to raid0 2 Raptors, chose this over a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R but have read a lot about these being a bit of a pig. so this will be the 3 time i change my mind. I also dont like the idea of a 4 week RMA wate

what's the Abit IP35 raid like, I want to be able to run raid 0 and a raid 5 array

Like I said, it seems that Seagate 7200.10's & 11's dont appear to have this problem but it has to be a bug with the actual motherboard because other drives work flawlessly with any other motherboard.

I can't remember if this effects non-raid setups but judging from the Asus thread people cannot even get windows to load up so I guess it does, needs further reading to be honest.

I actually liked the look of the Asus P5K Premium, I woudn't mind trying one out to see if its any better or worse than my Abit IP35 PRO, but for me I have 2 x WD 500GB 5000AAKS hard-drives which are one of the affected types of drives. :(

That looks a good board, everyone has had good reviews of it, will be even better if they fix the V-droop that affects the latest two bios updates for compatability with Penryn CPU's even with the voltage dampener on.

It's not a big deal though, vdroop affects a lot of boards it's part of Intel design specs so Buff states, but would be nice to have an accurate reading on my Abit IP35 PRO all the same lol.
