blueray 360? :s

Do you really think Microsoft is going to come out in favour of format developed by its big rivals (Sony and Apple)?

The PS3 has a Blu Ray drive to promote Blu Ray. The Xbox 360 has a HD-DVD add-on drive to promote HD-DVD. Where's the incentive for Microsoft to develop a Blu Ray drive? A couple of quid profit and a big promotion for its rivals? There's no need for them to develop a Blu Ray add-on.

The success of consoles is still based on two things - price and games.

If microsoft can make money in anyway i'm pretty sure they will take it lol, I dont see it as a bad thing, if HD-DVD's arent going to take off then if they can provide the next best thing, then I'm all for it.

If HD-DVD dies off then MS will almost certainly release a Blu-Ray drive for the 360, it's physically very simple for them to do.
As for politically, MS support hardware originally developed by rivals in other areas (firewire was if memory serves originally an Apple thing, but has been supported under windows for ages), and Apple, Sony etc all use stuff that was developed by or with MS in their hardware (IIRC the codec used in both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray was largely an MS development).
As I think I said the other day, if MS wanted to they could use one of the combo drives as a replacement for the HD-DVD add on, thus continuing to support their original choice of next gen disk, whilst adding support for the other format.

At the end of the day MS hedged their bets with the 360's drive capabilities and will no doubt follow the market (if Blu-ray had failed Sony would have been in a much more difficult situation).

Made me laugh, that's some weak point. :D

Well some would say it is a weak point. Many people didn't buy a PS3 because of the price caused by the blu ray drive. And if neither HD DVD or Blu-Ray become the dominant format then it still could be a weak point in the future.

Blu-Ray is Sony's format. I can't see them letting MS use their technology in the 360, unless MS pay a massive amount of money.

Blue-ray wasnt just developed by sony there are a lot more companys involved than them the patents for blue-ray are owned by several different companies.

if MS hadnt been so tight and just bundled the HD DVD player with the 360 like Sony did with Blu Ray and the PS3 perhaps HD DVD would be looking like the winner?

Doesnt bother me ive got PS3 so im happy they didnt bother

tight? didn't the price difference alert you to the fact that they didn't just 'bundle it'

Wouldn't have made much of a difference in that regard. HD-DVD still had utterly crap marketing, and not enough studio support even though Paramount went exclusive, which was a big thing - for a while.

but if they did bundle it thered be a hell of a lot of people with HD DVD drives and maybe the format theyve put shed loads of cash into wouldnt be failing

Possibly yes. The 'Elite' should have had the hd-dvd from the start tbh.

And the 360 would have cost another £100+ at launch and probably been delayed and suffered the same shortage of diodes that the PS3/Blu-ray suffered from ;)

From what I can remember HD-DVD wasn't a fully finalised spec 2 years ago ;)
