I'm looking for a PC game that challenges the brain somewhat. Portal was good (although quite an exception in the brain challenging/entertaining bracket I assume), but any other games out there that require some real working of the grey matter?

Adventure games are good for brain games, with all the puzzles and all and figuring out things.

Shooter games not really gona get a brain workout on those. Neither are racing games, or rpgs well maybe rpgs to a extent but most wont push you to think about things too much.

Basically any game with puzzles or you have to figure something out will be your best bet.

No, I figured Need For Speed ProStreet wouldn't really give me much in the way of a puzzle. Any good examples?

Also try some 4x games like civilization there not too bad.

Adventure games you could try syberia/the longest journey/safecracker/ etc..

Don't write off driving games! Play Live For Speed, and do some reading to learn how to set the car up properly - that'll get the brain working!

Basic and advanced LFS setup guides are here, and read some of the Physics of Racing articles here.

That'll get the old grey cells ticking nicely! :p

I found Pyschonauts to be a brain engager given the puzzle nature of the levels and such.

Have you tried Portal on advanced? Gets rather good at that point?

What about Discworld games? There very old but still very taxing on the brain.

What about the game where you play the guy in the red jacket, is investigating something in france and it starts off with a cafe being blown up?

Operation Flashpoint made you really think about how you did a mission, excellent reactive AI in that one.

The Homeworld games really required you to think about how you approached a mission too, very difficult, but very rewarding too.
