Why do I keep getting an inch or so of letterboxing on most of my 360 games?

Think the only one that doesn't do this is PGR4.

I'm using an LG Flatron Widescreen LCD monitor through VGA!
 
What resolution are you trying to use? Anything in the TFT options that tells it not to fill the whole screen under certain conditions?
 
It's 1280*1024 in the settings, I didn't use the widescreen option in the dashboard as it made everything look squashed.

Monitor is 22".
 
Think it depends on your resolution. try changing the settings???

I know for a fact on my 19" WS LCD the whole screen is filled.

Youve got a widescreen monitor but arnt using widescreen? :p

Have have you tried setting the 360 to, or as close as possible, to the native resolution of the monitor? 1280x1024 isn't a widescreen resolution.
 
It looked the best in dashboard with 1280*1024 so that's what I kept without thinking :p.

I have

640*480
848*480
1024*768
1280*720
1280*768
1280*1024
1360*768
1920*1080 (monitor doesn't support this)
