Official Asus P5N-T Deluxe nForce 780i Review/Overclock/Guide Thread

Got one of these now :) hopefully i won't have any problems, going to put the PC together soon :D

Hmm these are the parts i've just got...

Samsung SH-S203NBEBN 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer Lightscribe ReWriter (Black) - OEM
Gigabyte 3D Aurora 570 Black No PSU
Zalman CNPS9700-LED CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/LGA775)
Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz
BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC2 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit Edition DVD - OEM -
Samsung SM-226BW 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Glossy Black
Western Digital Raptor 150GB 10000RPM SATA 16MB Cache
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer 7.1 Sound Card - Retail
Asus P5N-T Deluxe nForce 780i (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 800MHz SLI-Ready Edition Low Latency Dual Channel DDR2

I got told by many on this board that my 620W PSU will be more than enough for Sli with 2 8800 GTX' is that correct then? Will this setup be fine with the board, and will my RAM be okay?

Best thing is to try it, personally I reckon you could run into issues, you're running a lot of power hungry stuff there.

Hmm, well here is one of the thread i made about the PSU:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17822973&highlight=xion

Origonaly i had a 1000W PSU chosen, but then got advised by pretty much everyone to go for the one i have now, but the lower W version, but i decided to stick with 750W as i wanted to ensure i had enough power. :( hmm worried now...

p.s i won't be going Tri of course, only 2 card Sli in a few months or so

That power supply should be fine, as long as its a good quality brand. I run a quad core, 3 hard drives, 2x8800gtx and a TEC titan amanda and its perfectly stable using a Enermax Infinity 720W.

You may struggle with that memory... :( I am using the Corsair stuff of the same spec and had loads of problems... Hopefully the OCZ SLI Stuff should work fine... :)

Have been planning to get one of these boards myself. Nice review and has helped me make my mind up.

Looking at 4GB of the OCZ PC2-8000 ReaperX... but worried that if i wanted to go to 8GB in the future with the same RAM it would notfit due to the big heatsink on top. Anyone know any different?:)

Looking at a spec like -

--Asus P5NT-Deluxe
--Q6600
--2x2GB of OCZ PC2-8000 (or G.skill depending on above question)
--2 x GTX's (possibly BFG) wondering about waiting for G92
--2 x WD 150GB Raptor 10,000RPM (Stripe 0)

-Housed in a CM Stacker 832
-Vista x64 HP
-1000W + PSU (not decided which)

Leaving a possible future upgrade to *8GB RAM and *TriSLi

You will struggle to fit 4 stick of reaper in the board but i'll see if i can find some to test it. As for the rest of the spec i'd pay the extra get 4x36gb raptors and raid them will be much faster :D

Thanks v much.. if you can do that:)

unusual to be told to spend more on this forum ! hehe... thought the more you put on the Raid 0.. the more chance it had of having a problem... but will look at that... but 154GB (so 140Gb?) will not be enough space though, after OS and software installed, for my work:)

-edit-
Infact, the G.skill would probably fit.. just have never used G.skill in a rig, and noticed you didnt recommend that one for this mobo.. but want the option of upgrading to 8 and they are the only PC8500(8000) ones at 2GB sticks.

-After reading a few review like the sound of the G.skill too, just worried about Overclocking the Q6600 to 3.2Ghz with this system... as i never overclocked anything to date.

Having issues with my Tri SLI set up the comp wont switch on with 3x gpu's attached,
It will start with 1 and 2 cards but its seems when you drop that 3rd card into the middle pci slot it wont boot all you get is a fraction of a second where the case fans almost make half a turn then nothing.
At first i thought it was a psu issue but its a brand new 1500w, rechecked all the cables and everything is spot on.
So i now reckon it might be the mobo, has anyone had any similar issues?
Im going to reflash the bios tonight so fingers crossed that will work.

hmm would suck to find out the mobo is faulty after a few months or a year when you decide to try Tri Sli out :S Hope my boards fine...

No sorry thats not my problem.. I am getting intermittant hanging... Cant get any OS on it... :( Just freezes. It is possibly some sort of heat issue as you get further through the install if the machine is cold...

I ment to add, when the gpu's are in 1 and 3 slot it will power up in sli no problem when you put the cards in slots 1 and 2 it wont power up, This also makes me think it could be a fault in the middle pci slot.

How about just one card in slot 2?

Also, a couple more points.

That PSU has 2 AUX "CPU" power connectors (one of which is supposed to go into the socket on the top left of your board - which comes with a plastic cover over half the socket).

The first of these plugs is a 4+4pin which can be combined into an 8pin if required, the other is a straight 8pin.

You've probably done this, but remove that plastic cap over the socket (top left) on the board and use the 4+4pin connector in it - that is, make sure both 4pin connectors are used in the socket - instead of the straight 8pin.

I say this as the manual states that the 8pin connector draws power from 2 of the PSUs 12v rails wheras the 4+4 only draws from 1, it shoudn't be an issue for that PSU in any case, but with three 8800s, you never know.

Also, try switching the connectors around, ie: have the cards that are in slots 2 and 3 powered from the four V4 points (4th rail) and the card in slot 1 powered from two of the V3 points (3rd rail), or perhaps try giving all three cards 1x V4 and 1x V3. Again, not that you should have to, but try other combinations aswell, just to be sure.

Notice also that one of the PCI-E connectors is "hard wired", while the remaining 6 are modular.

On the hard wired one, there is a 6 AND an 8pin connector, you must use either one or the other of these and not both, for instance, don't plug in the 6pin connector and then use an 8-6pin adaptor on the 8pin and plug that in aswell, just make sure one of the two is always left unused. Once more, you're probably way ahead of all this, but just incase:).

Some cracking knowledge there, cheers balth

I've got everything you've said correct except the the cpu connection on the top left of the board, i've got an 8 pin in there, I'll try that when i get home.

It could well be an overloading problem 2 cards could be fine but 3 pushes it too far on a rail.
